I recently dyed my hair to a shade of red like 3 weeks ago. I had brown hair before and the shade change wasn't that dramatic. Im thinking that when it comes time to re-dye my hair I want to go a few shades lighter. I want to just do a box dye, but I was wondering if it'll work. Do I have to bleach my hair to get the old color out, or can I just dye over it? I really want to avoid having to pay to get it done at a salon.

if I remember correctly, red is very hard/impossible to dye over. I had red highlights, and I could not darken them. my buddy did hair modeling and had pink streaks, he's naturally blonde, he tried to dye it out after with blonde hair dye and all it did was lighten it. I think lightening it might be easier than darkening it.

I had fire engine red hair, and just dyed over it.

My hair has a somewhat natural copper pigment, so when dye starts to fade it automatically goes to a auburn-ish shade.

You should be fine depending on what colour you decide to go

it's basically auburn now, but the next time i dye it i wanted it to be a more distinctive red tone. so i want it to be lighter. just not sure if it'll work.

Depends on the hair and how well it holds color. I can't ever go lighter without bleaching first, every time I've tried out of a box it just washed straight out and was basically the same color as before.

Give it a shot and see, you'll figure out your hair quickly.
