My first zoom was a tammy 28-75. Nice lens, sharp and all, but slow focusing and too noisy for weddings. I sold it, bought the canon 24-70, then sold that when I went to mostly primes.

I just landed a huge gig that has me shooting hundreds of product shots of varying sizes. I need a medium zoom so I'm not constantly moving the camera or changing lenses. My 16-35 is too wide and my 70-200 is probably going to be too long.

So I found another Tammy on FM and just sent the dude the money. I guess I'll hang onto this lens. :x:

i think products look bad when shot with wide angles.

I'd use the 70-200 and just move back.

Personally I use a 100mm macro for all of my product shots, unless i can't move back far enough.

I'm shooting all these in NYC and St. Louis and have no idea of the amount of room I have to work in so I'm just covering my ass.

28-75 did an excelling job for me, when I was doing product shots of my own stuff. Since I sold it, I haven't done much.

I'm sure this lens won't get used much beyond this assignment but this company is flying me to St. Louis four times a year to shoot so I'll more than make my money back.

Does the shoot in St. Louis happen to have anything to do with alcohol?

Just a guess. I grew up there and it seems like everyone I know who works with products there does something for or with AB or the brands they own.

I have off on the 11th.. shame..

I'd actually be interested in your setup and watching you shoot a few items.. as i have zero experience shooting anything in a studio and i figure it would be interesting to see.. no way i'd stay for 400+ items :o

hell i would at least take you out for a beer, i've learned quite a bit from your posts.

I'd be happy to have you join me, the only drawback is that I'll be traveling with my client and I have no idea where we'll be except that it's in the city.

I did the same thing with that lens. Had, never really used it, sold it. Now that I am shooting a lot for the book/food stuff, I have been barrowing it from the guy to whom I sold it.

I know i'll be in NYC on the 11th, with camera in hand.. hopefully the girlfriend won't mind me taking pictures all day :o

When shooting product, do you use continuous lighting, or strobes/flash?

Usually flash but it depends on the product and location. For a larger or highly reflective products where I'm likely to use multiple lights/flags, I would use continuous light as it's easier to use/place/modify the light.

I remember you shooting baseball cards. Do you have any advice on how to shoot photos?

Two lights at 45 degree angles to the camera. Set camera to the color temp of your lights. Camera on a tripod looking down. Photos laying flat on the floor on a white piece of foamcore. Use a cable or remote release. Shoot at f/5.6 on a lens with a maximum aperture of at least f/2.8.

EDIT: and your lens should be at least a 50mm on a full frame body or longer.
