Friday is my second chest day for the week. I typically do mostly barbell and cable work on Fridays as opposed to the dumbbell chest work I do on Mondays. I took yesterday off from the gym to accept delivery of our new washer (I split my Thursday leg day between Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation) so I wasn't sure how I was feeling this morning with a day missing from my normal routine.

On my first exercise, flat bench, I did 4 sets consisting of 135x10, 185x9, 205x6, and 225x4.

On my second exercise, incline bench, is where I got into trouble. On the first three sets I did 135x10, 155x10, 185x6 and I thought about going to 195x4 since I felt strong this morning. The first rep of 195 felt good, though heavy. On the second rep, I lost it 3/4 of the way up. I am not sure what happened other than I completely lost my mental concentration and my right arm refused to cooperate. I managed to get the left side on the holding peg, but I could not do the same for the right side. I thought about yelling help but didn't want to exert what little energy my right side had left so I kept trying to push and just make it to the peg (I was less than 1" below it). After 5 seconds of this and ensuring no one was walking on my right side out of the corner of my eye, I dumped the 45, 25, and 5 to the floor. Everyone in the gym took notice and one of my gym friends who is in his 40's came over from across the gym to help. After dumping the weight to the floor, I concentrated on keeping the left side steady to prevent the bar from swinging and dropping the weight/hitting someone. My friend made it over, held the bar, and I got up. I was embarrassed but reminded myself that something like this has happened to everyone who has been in the gym long enough and I was due my turn after years of being relatively accident free.

One of the female trainers (one of the few who is actually in shape) came over with pins and suggested I used those. I politely told her that it wouldn't have helped in this circumstance and was likely to have made the situation worse. Our gym uses plates with the rubber shell (instead of bare metal), so the weights are stable and do not move or rattle under good form. If I had used the pins, I would not have been able to dump the right side and, because of this, the left side would have come off the peg as I continued to lose my strength and could have made the situation much worse by the weight falling on my chest. In my opinion, dumping was the best option.

In hindsight, I should have used a spot with that much weight on incline as I did not know my limit this morning. I continued my workout and now, an hour later, I'm enjoying a can of tuna at my desk and 2 cups of yogurt

I was praying to get that weight up. I tried to talk my concentration back in my mind, but I just couldn't do it. At that point, I figured dumping the weight was probably better than having the left side come off the peg and fall on my neck/collarbone/chest. I also briefly thought about taking the left side off (if I could) and laying the weight on my chest but I figured that my wrists wouldn't have held it long (if it all) because of the incline.

I don't like to do bar at all. My shoulder got so turn up, especially on flat. I mix some in now, but I'm not lifting the weight I once did. I think dumbell presses > *

You did the right thing.. no need to injure yourself for a small bit of machoness. You'll get it next time and it'll feel good.

When in doubt, use the DerekForeal dump method. Posted in another thread.

It happens and it's exactly why I don't use collers when I lift without a spotter. Better to be able to dump it than be forced into a situation where you could injur yourself.

I throw the db's down when I'm done with an incline or decline db set. Too exhausted at the end to put them down gently :big grin:

The benches at my school have safety pins underneath the normal rack on the bench... They have saved my ass so many times.
