Over the next few months, i am planning on upgrading my system in my car. Right now, it consists or 2 12" Image Dynamics, a 1000 Watt crossfire amp, a 150 watt crossfire amp, Brax Components, Clarion Headunit. I want to get a new, in dash Dvd/Cd/Mp3, and also a new amp for my front speakers, and install the 6x9 crossfire speakers in my back deck. Along with the In dash will come PS2. Now, luckily i havent had a problem with my alternator yet, but this will put it over. So i dont know if it would be better to get a Optima YellowTop for the trunk and an isolator, or a new High Ouput Alternator, like 160amps.

What is your current alternator rated for?

Unless its 50 amps or something, I really doubt you would need either a new alternator or battery.

The only time you are going to be pulling 100+ amps from the electrical system by your stereo is when you turn your subwoofer amp up so loud that it is audibly distorting.

With those things you will not need an alternator over 110, which is what most large cars have stock.

Why 110 ampere? Why not 100 or 120? :dunno:

when the total system amperage draw exceeds 120% of the alternators max output, the alternator and battery will begin to sustain damage....expecially to the alternators diodes.

I'd get an uprated alternator anyway, GM ones suck donkey balls, the diodes die easily, get a 110-120amp one. :)

well the thing is, i know that when i have my underbody neons on, along with my system at a moderate level, my ABS and Traction Shut off because the car cant supply them with enoguht juice, and they are the first things to shut down. So myabe a 160amp Alt. will be the best bet.

measure what the current draw of the car is alone....without having the stereo on

That depends. If the devices drawing the majority of that 200 ampere figure are amplifiers, you really don't have to worry, as even listening at moderatly loud volumes, you would still be drawing less than 20 amps or so. When you turn it up real loud, you MIGHT draw all 200 amperes from the electrical system, but typically you won't.

$200 sounds exxxcellnet to me

thumper: how can I perform a leak test? the R21 gets a dead battery after 6-7 days of resting :sad2: shall I measure amps between negative socket and negative battery post? I just wanna see if the drain is over 200mamps, it's gotta be over that or the alarm would go nuts

yeah, that's my reasoning...it's fused for 200 amps, so it'll never hit that unless i clip the shit out of my amps

I replaced the battery ( stock is 550 and I bough a 600 one ) thinking that the 3 years old battery finally died, remember this car was only driven by my gf only a couple times each month so my best guess is that there is a dirty earth somewhere fucking up things...
