    1. How did you build your website? Did you do it yourself, have a friend do it, or use a company?
    2. Who does your hosting?

Im trying to make my own and am trying to figure out what I need to do.

    Thanks.

My website isn't shit, I made it myself but it's just a plain white page with a link to Gallery. Gallery does the job fine unless you want something fancy, or professional looking, then you probably want to buy a template or hire somebody.

However, I can recommend hosting and domain service through angryhosting.

Guy who runs it is very sharp and helpful, and great value for money.

$1/mo gets you 1GB storage and 10GB transfer. Add like $9 a year to register a domain name.

I use SmugMug for my photos. Whipped up some CSS to customize the site to my liking with my logo and information. Very nice and easy to use. $150 a year for hosting.

I also run a number of other sites though which I host elsewhere not related to my photography.

I do all of my websites. I'm a web developer, so it helps. I work at a hosting company, so shoot me a PM if you're looking for a good deal on hosting ;)

Easiest way to get a web site up and going, while keeping it low level enough to be able to manage it yourself is to buy your domain name, install a wordpress blog, install a theme that you like and start learning to customize it however you want. There are a shit load of plug-ins and themes for photographers and end clients will never know the difference...

As far as hosting goes, I recommend www.HostGator.com.

They have great customer service, reliable service (I've got 94 total sites hosted with them and I have yet to have a serious enough problem that they couldn't handle it within an hour or two). Plus it's only 7.95 for the baby croc, which is more than you'll ever use most likely.

The nice thing about using a site like smugmug is that you can have your own domain, and they take care of the printing and shipping. In my experience so far, it has been fantastic service. Some have hit or miss. I love it though and so do my customers.

The fact they take care of the printing and shipping for me is completely worth the $150 a year. That would be such a pain in the dick for me since i'm so busy.

I bought and edited a template, and about to do it again.

If you aren't a seasoned pro, showit sites has a freebe deal going, but its hosted on their server and limited to 5 pages and 30mb of storage. But there isn't a simpler or cleaner way to have a great multimedia page. You may have to be a paying customer for other products, not sure on that.

I've been looking at bludomain. Their sites are pretty nice, and the price seems reasonable.

theres a couple here that use them, but personally I wouldn't hand them a penny. They have terrible customer service and have made some awful choices that have screwed many customers. Plus soo many others use them, your site would never be original

Whats the address for your site Nicholas? I used smugmug a long time ago for just something basic but never did anything fancy to it.

I have a domain and hosting already, but I'm currently using a wordpress template. I like the templates that smugmug offers, but I already have hosting. I'd like to find a template to buy for a page so that I could easily build my site and maintain it, but I can't seem to find anything, and I haven't found a template for wordpress that I like yet.

I bought a template and edited it myself too, and use namecheap to host, with Google Accounts setup as my mail account, so I can use gmail for the business mail.

I'd recommend everything except namecheap. they suck. I know a lot of guys who use Dreamhost and LOVE them.

Google "free wordpress theme" and check out http://woothemes.com.

There are thousands of free themes, there should be no reason you can't find one you like.

Just learn to modify the theme and you should be good to go.

Check out the flexibility theme from http://www.flexibilitytheme.com/

I've used that theme for everything from lead generation pages to custom photography galleries for clients.
