    Buy an external HDD

    Start burning to CD

Or start doing what I did and use www.Carbonite.com

$49.99 for the year and it's "unlimited."

I've backed up all of My Pictures and My Documents and it has a very simple user interface.

No I don't work for Carbonite or get anything from your signing up. I just had my OS drive crashed and if it weren't for my backups I'd be in a world of hurt!

good call. i backup stuff from home to our office, but should probably do something like carbonite as well.

    do they use S3?

were there any other services you were looking at? Why did you settle on carbonite?

could not agree more. although I generally only backup RAW's. I can always reprocess images if need be.

how long has carbonite been in business and what happens to my stuff if they decided in 20 years that they dont feel like being in business

All my stuff is in an external HD, thinking of buying a small one just for time machine on the apple.

what if the hdd in your external takes a shit? That's what bothers me.

i have a 4-drive standalone NAS (readynasNV+) that's great, but i would like to backup at least all of my images as well as documents and stuff.

does carbonite support backing up stuff on mapped drives or network shares?

apparently the home version of Mozy doesn't, but Mozy Pro does. :o

It sounded like a good idea until I realized how much stuff I actually need to backup. My drives are a couple years old already and I should start looking for a solution. :noes:

You guys gave me an idea of what to do while I'm on vacation. I've got a stack of DVD's and although all of my pictures are in a RAID 1 config...I think it's a good idea to have an off site backup. I'll burn everything on DVD's and put them in my inlaws safe.

I'm the same...I burn all of my raw files to DVD within a week of shooting.

the problem is when I edit something and haven't uploaded it to the net...and then lose my hard drive:o:mad::wtc:

I did some edits on about 20 photos the other night, and then the next morning my PC decided it didn't like me anymore and I had to start from scratch:wtc:

I always write mine to a CD but I'm going to start backing up to my external drive. Porn doesn't take up as much space as i thought so i have a lot of space left.

I finally just started backing up everything on my end. Huge external drives are so cheap now that you could back up to two or more easily. I only have one in my rotation now but I also have a file server in my house that I back up to as well. I'm paranoid so at some point, I'll make a dump to DVD for the fire safe as well.

    cheap!

and they only charge you on actual transfer, correct? i mean, if i uploaded 300gb last month and only uploaded 1gb this month, my bill for this month would only be for the 1gb, right?

They charge you for space used and data transferred and only what you use of both.

For 300GB you would be charged $45 for the 300GB of space you're using and $30 for the 300GB of bandwidth you used. For a total of $75

For your next month you would be charged $45.15 for the 301GB of space and $0.10 for the 1GB of transfer. For a total of $45.25.
