    Hey guys,

im thinking of getting a rifle, im thinking bolt action, something simple. Looking for some advice

i've been to firing ranges, shot a variety of guns, pistols, rifles and shotguns

what are some good brands to look for, im not looking to build one, just starting off with something from the factory that i can practice with at the range, possibly below 600 dollars

    thanks!

10/22 even though it's not bolt action; it's nice and cheap, extremely upgradeable, ammo is cheap, and it's fun as hell.

Or you could go with a 700 in some form, but you may go over 600 with a scope/bipod.

You can do a Savage & scope and keep it with in your price range.

I'll probably get flamed for this...but if you are just looking at having some fun, you can buy a Mosin for less than $150. It's a simple, bolt action rifle that has a nice 'pop' to it. It is kind of a pain to clean though. I don't know how much ammo compares to other rifle calibers though as I don't own a rifle that's not .22. This might not be what you are looking for though, as I don't really know what your goals are.

Anything in a 22lr really, I personally have a bolt action savage and love it. It doesn't kick like a mule, but 10 bucks for 550 bullets is hard to beat.

Marlin 981T is a bolt action .22 that has a good reputation.

My first trip to the range (well since I was in indian guides) was 30-06 and 54R, both with steel buttplates. I put 5 or so 54R and 80 30-06 down range that day.

I have a bruise in the shape of a buttplate the next day.

I picked up a Mosin 91/30 about a month ago for $89 including the background check. It's chambered in 7.62x54R. The ammo is a little pricey, but whatever. Bolt action with a 5 round magazine.

They're great shooters and you're owning a piece of history.

i've shot an sks a couple of times, also now that i think about it, some bolt action 22 rifle, and a 12 gauge beretta shotty, and a handful of revolvers including a .45, just never had to own or maintain a gun

I'm guessing it's surplus though. I like my shells made from brass and boxer primed.

then what is the point of even getting a mosin if you aren't going to shoot mil-surp through it? it ruins the point of a sub 100 buck gun when you shoot pricey ass ammo through it.

For someone new to the hobby you really can't go wrong with a 10/22.
