I always get looks of amazement from friends that don't know anything about firearms when I mention something about getting a suppressor, or even just talking about concealed carry, or open carry, etc. One friend refused to believe that an Ohio resident can walk down the street with a loaded handgun on his or her hip and it's completely legal. What are some gun laws or legalities that you think would surprise non-gun owners who don't know any better? Feel free to specify your state.

You can buy a gun from a private party by just giving him cash.

I had someone tell me that you can't have guns within 200' of a school. Too bad my backyard shares a fence with an elementary school....

I'm the only gun person I know and everyone thinks that AR-15's illegal. They also thought that they were fully automatic.

CA is wacky as everyone knows.

You cannot drive around with a handgun in your vehicle unless it is in a locked container, ammo has to seperate from the gun, magazines cannot be loaded. This somewhat makes sense in a CA type way. but...

Rifles of non AW type can be unsecured in vehicle. Mags can be loaded but not in the rifle. Shotguns can be unsecured in vehicle and loaded.

Everyone knows the 10 round mag thing in CA but it is difficult to enforce. Any mag produced before the ban is good to go if the DOJ cannot prove that you didn't have the mag prior to the ban. Only way they can do this is that said magazine was unavaliable in the US prior to the ban. Specificly it states you can repair a magazine with components of same type (defined as same capacity for same firearm). Thus you can replace mag bodies of 1st and 2nd gen glock mags with 5th gen mags bodies, usgi Ar mag bodies with Pmags, etc. Just keep your old mag bodies as proof unless you misplaced those. To date nobody in CA has been busted for high cap mags unless there was another crime being pursuded. EX gangbangers with stolen gun and also happened to have high caps.

In CA you can have whatever AW you want as long as it is not on a list of firearms banned by name ex colt AR-15. There are all kinds of stipulations that don't make much sense but short story is AR's and AK's are the best selling guns in CA. Go figure.

Ammo can be in the same case as a gun, and in loaded mags. It's no different from a handgun to a long gun. LOADED = from a position in which it can be fired. Only one in the chamber or a loaded mag in the magwell counts as loaded.

A friend of mine is moving to Philly, and she wants a shotgun for HD. She asked who she should call to register it. When I said no one, it isn't possible, she asked who she should register it with in case she needed to use it.

Loaded handgun mags in a vehicle is misdermeanor in CA. Pretty serious as far as minsdemeanors go as it is firearms related.

There is no federal law that says you cannot carry a weapon into a bank.

I don't think this is true at all.
The only way I could see this as being remotely true is what I believe was the Hale case - the guy got a misdemeanor for concealed weapon - his gun was in plain sight, but the loaded mag was concealed. He didn't get in trouble for loaded, only concealed.
    A magazine isn't a firearm:
The term firearm includes rifles, shotguns, revolvers, pistols, or any other device designed to be
used as a weapon from which a projectile is expelled by the force of any explosion or other form of
combustion. The term firearm includes the frame or receiver of any such weapon. (Penal Code §12001.)

    12031 states:
    (g) A firearm shall be deemed to be loaded for the purposes of this section when there is an unexpended cartridge or shell, consisting of a case that holds a charge of powder and a bullet or shot, in, or attached in any manner to, the firearm, including, but not limited to, in the firing chamber, magazine, or clip thereof attached to the firearm;
