So long story short: Roommate just got out of the marines, and built an M4. We go hunting and stuff, but I only have a 30-30 Bolt Action Rifle, while he has his M4 and a Mauser. I've been wanting to buy a pistol first, and I've always wanted to build something similar to his M4. But seeing he built his already I can't wait now to build mine :mamoru: You guys have any input on M4's, M16's etc? I am looking to build something similar and this is what I've decided on, and budgeted:

Top to bottom, (correct me if I'm wrong) M16A1, M16A2, M4, M16A4. I've decided I want an M16A4, but the look of the M16A1. I talked to my roommate briefly, and I'll talk to him more tonight, but from what I can tell, there's no difference in the M16 model variants, of the upper receivers? I had my roommate put together an M16 that visually looks like an M16A1, but has the M16A4 parts, just the A1 foregrip, and A2 buttstock from this website

    http://www.ar15-kits.com/index1.html

that included everything but the lower reciever, which I will be going to a local gunshow dec 6 or 7 to get. He got his last month for 200 at a seperate gunshow, so with 200 budget for lower, and buying everything else from that site, we're approximating 850-875 total for an M16 for myself. Mainly since he wants to buy some 5.56 in bulk I want a 5.56 round gun aswell, also he knows by heart how to build/takedown any m4/m16, he was an armorer in the marines since 2004 until august this year and knows his shit. Also if it matters, he prefers the M4 since it's what he used in the marines, and was also the gun he got his first kill with :o

CLIFFS: Which gun would you prefer from the picture and why?

My objective is to use this thread as a journal, I'll take pictures of anything I buy, I'd like it completely built by the end of january, which is my 23rd birthday. I am going to gunshows dec 6/7 and jan 17/18. So anything I dont buy at the gunshows I will order jan 17/18 online, so as to get them before end of january. :noes: :x:

EDIT: AR-15 Goddamnit get overyourself wow big deal
EDIT2: Learned alot within the past week or so, I'm now just trying to figure out where the cheapest lower receiver within a 50 mile range of the bay area CA can be found

    UPDATE!
Purchased my lower receiver at the local gun show, paid more than I'd have liked to spend, but prices have only been going up. 169.99 before taxes/dros, 257 out the door. 57 more than I'd hoped but, finally got it so I'm stoked. Now I need to find everything else online and order it :noes:
id take a picture, but all i have is the lower right now, so w/e :o

how much did you pay for your eotech sights (sp?) and complete basic setup for the m4?

I wasn't sure where it should go, if it doesn't get enough responses I'll bump it and ask an admin to move the thread

I guess I misquoted him then, I know you're right, just mistyped. So longer barrels just yield a greater overall shooting range?

I want to build a M16A1 basically, I don't know what you mean yet by an M4 or an AR15, isn't an M4 also an AR15? Sorry, still learning :o

Not really sure how you would accomplish the goal of having an A4 clone that looks like an A1... everything that makes it an A1 is changed on the A4. Unless you go out of your way to find original spec parts, any small parts you buy now are going to be proper for the A4, so otherwise you're looking at a flattop vs. A1 style upper, A2/4 vs. A1 length stock, Knights M5 rail vs. triangular handguard, and 1/7 twist barrel vs. 1/12.

Anything you buy is going to be, technically, an AR15. The military terms are commonly used in the civilian world to describe "clones" or "styles" of AR15 builds.

First of all lets clear of the legality issues of you being in CA. Are you aware of any legality issues at all? Do you know anything about SB23? Anything about the fixed magazine or no pistol grip? If not we will start from square one.

yes I remember the conversation better now, He said I'd get an A4 upper, which has some kind of rail system, but would mount that handle on top, carrying handle i think. Basically he said I'd get an a4 and get it to look like an a2, maybe an a1?

it also increases the amount of time the rifle has to perform the cycle of operations before the round leaves.

    those both increase accuracy

yeah let me answer this first, I have been reading up on them, I do not know what sb23 is but from I have read, and been told, my roommates rifle is legal because it is over the minimum length allowed, has a fixed magazine (bullet button I think), 10 round magazine, and is only capable of being semi automatic. I've also been told to call it an AR-15, or AR because that's the proper term for a civilian legal rifle of this sort or something.

I'll keep those, and that price in mind thanks

    Perfect...
With the bullet button and an overall barrel length + flash hider of 16" you will be fine.
Whereabouts in CA are you? I can lead you around to several shops possibly. Plus check out calguns.net

I bet $1000 that you don't build an M4/16 or a permaban bet, which ever you prefer

Now if I were you I would purchase everything separate if your roommate was an armorer, but if not at least the lower, LPK, stock, and upper assembly.
If you buy the upper whole, everything is put together pretty much like legos.

Now what is the purpose of your AR15? It is for looks and coolness and just to plink around? Are you going to hunt anything with it at all? With these we can help you choose what you want.
