Well it seems my $89 Bushnell scope (which actually worked very well) has
decided to quit working normally.....it's stuck on 3x and won't adjust upwards
    in magnification.

A few friends that are fairly knowledgeable have pointed me towards the
Super Sniper scopes for good quality/price.

I'm thinking of something along the lines of....(or the 10x version)

    http://www.swfa.com/pc-4306-231-super-sniper-16x42-30mm-rifle-scope.aspx

On the negative side, a 30mm scope would mean new rings, and I would be
very inclined to get some bling QD rings.

Anyway, any good/bad on the SuperSniper scopes?

They have a fixed 10x for the same price too....I'll probably go down to SWFA
to pick it up so I'll likely be able to see first hand what magnification I want
    to walk away with.

That'd be the best idea, I hate not being able to handle things before buying but that's the nature of the game when you live in the sticks :hs:

    :ugh:

so you are recomending he go from a sub-100 scope to a 1k+ rifle. For all practical purposes, it won't matter.

fwiw, I haven't really heard anything bad about SS scopes.

what caliber? i was in the market for .338 and 50bmg, a SS scope on those platforms lasts about two rounds, and then something is jarred loose

so yeah, i would say go for the higher dollar applications

I have heard of SS scopes being fine for a couple hundred through a .50 (the longest he had it, hadn't failed yet)

I don't particularly care about their business model and the term "sniper" since
it is a government contracted item.

And yeah, the nightforce scopes are good but I'm honest with myself and
understand that for the most part, it would be serious overkill on a 16" AR
firing at 200 yards or less, with me behind the optic. (that said, I have done
a good number of 1MOA or less groups with my cheap bushnell and cheap
ammo so I'm not a total jackass)

I've been searching and a few people that have used the SS scopes to kill
people for a living say the turrets are a little squishy and their large size
seem to make them prone to rotating on accident (bouncing in a vehicle,
    rubbing clothes, etc)

Go to snipershide, snipersparadise, etc. and you can find plenty of people that have had them on .50's for lots of rounds with zero problems. When they were branded as Tasco super snipers they had lots of problems, when SWFA took over the line they vastly improved the QC on them. If money is not a problem than I say go for Leupold, Nightforce, USO, etc. For the budget minded though you can't get much better than the SS for the money, good glass, and plenty of elevation adjustment.

I have a 16x on my 700p and like it, but I do reccomend getting the 10x to pretty much everyone. If you are mostly shooting at 100yards like most ranges seem to be the 16x is way overkill and you will really hate the mirage you see on hot days. If you are using the rifle mainly for hunting I would say avoid the SS and go back to an adjustable 3-9x or so, even a fixed 10x is usually way too much for the distance most hunting is done at.

The turret mushy problem is usually due to way too much grease on the orings, mine were like that until I pulled them off and just wiped the excess off. Now they have very positive clicks. Turrets rotating on accident? It is going to take more than just rubbing on some clothes or bouncing in a car to make them move on accident, if they are turning that easy something else is wrong. Now that I see it is for a 16" AR, I would say you are going overkill with a SS, you can get a nice variable leupold for under 300 bucks that would be great. Sure it doesn't look tacticool, but shooting <200 you don't really need fingertip adjustable turrets and other gizmos.

To be more clear it was more like "bouncing around the Humvee for a week"
and comments like that.....I elaborated poorly.

Yeah the 16" AR is a real problem. I've been contemplating a longer upper,
a jump to a 308 AR, or maybe a bolt action of some sort in the future, but
that's not the current scenario. Sort of thinking, buy it now since my
scope is down, and have it for overkill on the carbine, but a good set-up
on a more precise rifle down the line. I guess I don't want to snag another
cheap scope, then have to look back as a missed opportunity.

I have taken a look at some Nikons and others since I posted my original
message, mostly due to the realization of needing new rings and it looks like
the SS and other scopes would really benefit from a cantilever style mount
    to get better eye relief.

This rifle is mainly to put holes in paper and other assorted non-moving
targets (plinking @100-200 yards basically). I'm not terribly worried about
the tacticool issue but that's hard for me to say considering how riced out
    my rifle is......

Don't try to be logical, throwing money at it is the only answer here.

It's true, the SS scopes have great reviews. Even from the .50 BMG shooters.
I am thinking about one myself.

They're designed to withstand 1000 rounds of .375 H&H, the 4200's are rated to 10,000.

The more I think about the problem the more it gives me a headache. The
SS scopes would almost definitely require a cantilever mount, new 30mm rings,
and on and on, for a rifle that's going to be used 100-200 yards.

I think given the expense, tossing in another relatively cheap scope into the
mount I have is the way to go and wait until I build a more suitable upper/rifle
    for a nicer scope.

I just snagged a Nikon Pro-Staff 3-9x40 at bass pro shops for a decent
price. Had 2 people walk up to me while I was looking at it say they were
    using it and loved it.

I'll save the leet tactical scope for another rifle/upper.

    Thanks for everybody's input.
