Anybody see this shit? I don't think it'll happen (and most likely alarmist bs), but to think this is an option to the antis is kind of unsettling.

It is. Also, he forgets that any treaty a) must be ratified by 2/3 of the senate (that's 67 votes. The Dems only have 60 in their party, some of whom might just vote against a treaty that impinges on domestic rights...) and b) according to a 1947 Supreme Court decision, which is cited in the arfcom thread, is null and void in the US where provisions are repugnant to the US Constitution.

I have personally communicated about this back in April with John Lott who says it is not possible to 'treaty around' US domestic laws like that. This measure only deals with transfers between countries, not individuals. This circulating post/email is ripe for Snopes inclusion. The dates keep changing in the email, and the links back to reuters never seem to work. Here is the actual working article, which seem s to have been re-'printed' at least once since I originally saw it 6 months ago: http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSTRE59E0Q920091015 .

The first time I saw it they were talking about it being snuck in with some sort of trade agreement with Mexico.

International treaties can not override the constitution.

    Sounds like alarmist bs.

I suppose they could try to make ammo and firearm import law more strict but that would have to go though congress.

Obama probably did this to placate the antis knowing it would never pass muster in this country :dunno:

He looks like he wants to be tough on guns, while insisting this treaty gets uninimous approval (which won't happen).

On the "conservative view", as I've said before, I will say again: I would LOVE to see this country attempt to remove firearms from law-abiding citizens. You want to see a fucking war? Bring it the FUCK on, BITCHES

This has already been done. Why do you think you can't get a dragunov or cheap ammo from anywhere?

The point is to get other countries from banning export. You can't sign a treaty to do away with guns. You can sign one that encourages china or whatever foreign nation to not export to you.

I love reading articles that clearly show the author has no idea about the way laws are made in the US.

    1) No treaty can supersede the US Constitution.

    2) If guns get banned (whether through constitutional amendment or unconstitutional treaty), there will be a revolt. I hope.
