If you want to test software on installion B but it has a virus, chances are, it'll fuck up installation A also. I'd save myself the trouble and just load it up on a virtual machine.

tHEdARKhORiZON: The primary purpose for this is not for virus protection; nor was it meant as virues protection at all. The only piece of software that is capable of protecting you from a virus, incredibly, is you. If you don't follow sensical rules, then of course you are going to be infected at some point. I've operated PCs for over a decade and without a virus scanner for most of them. My systems have never been infected.

Also, most viruses don't operate that way. Most viruses and trojans will modify or replace files with in the active system. They don't care about and aren't aware of there being another system on the system. They won't waste their time infecting files that for all intensive purpose, will never be used. A trojan's best defense is to remain descrete and infecting large #s of files will raise alarms. I wouldn't be surprised if many fail outright because they make assumptions about file locations. They cannot modify the inactive system's registry. Only BootSector Viruses/Trojans and those that are made multi-OS aware, will be a problem. Those that scan your ENTIRE system and blindly infect certain filenames may also be a threat. Even virus scanners fail to combat those more malicious and well thought-out lines of viruses/trojans. So, as was stated, the ONLY defense against infection is YOU.

BEFORE you say "it is a waste of time", try it. I and many others have found these custom setups to be quite convenient and useful. There are many reasons to do this; but these are outlined my GUIDE post.

In short, try it... it won't cost you any money.
It shouldn't take much time to comprehend 0-5 short, simple steps. ;)

Have you tried it ? Perhaps it is a waste of time... "for you".
Irregardless, you are entitled to your opinion and I respect it.

Cybertron, is VMWare & VirtualPC free ?

Not only is it not free, but the software will probably cost you a pretty-penny. Virtual PC only supports Microsoft O/S(s).
Aside from it's complexity, it does sound like a good idea.
