I'm pretty torn between these two...
I can get an AK47 Carbine for $429 from Henderson, and I think the GSG-5s are going for $499 or so...
I've always wanted an AK (I already have an AR15), but the GSG looks fun (and cheap) to shoot. I know I'd probably never use it as such, but I like the fact that the AK has real stopping power compare to the GSG.
Keep in mind, I'm in CA. And if you can point me in the direction of any relatively cheap AKs, I'm all ears :)

    no contest... GSG-5.

AR has the stopping power that you need for HD. The GSG is gonna be cheaper to shoot, and loads of fun.

Too bad you can't SBR it due to your location. This is probably the only situation where I'd condone getting a fake can that fits over the barrel... The GSG looks weird with that long exposed barrel, otherwise.

Yeah, with the GSG I'd keep the fake can on it. Looks pretty neat I guess.
I almost want to go with the AK in case some silly gun laws come up again...whereas the GSG is a rimfire and should be available forever.
But damn, it would be nice to be able to take the GSG down to the local pistol range and be able to shoot for ridiculously cheap.

$12 gets you a brick of 550 rounds. if you don't have a fun .22LR semi-auto already, then you know what to do.

I would be using a bullet button on the AK, the same way I have the AR set up.
I'll see if I can find a GSG-5 anywhere. If not, what's a good place to find a complete AK?

Almost any sporting goods store. I bought mine at a Dunham's, but I think that's a mid-west thing. I want to tell you to get an AK because they're so much fun to shoot, but if you don't already have a semi-auto .22lr you should definitely get one. I'm not a fan of the GSG5 though. My personal opinion:

    10/22: $180
    Bull barrel: $100
MP5 airsoft body: $100ish for a nice one

For $380 you can have yourself a bullpup MP5, and if you want to expand on it you can always take off the airsoft body and turn it into a tack driver. There's not a whole lot you can do with a GSG5 as far as customizing it (aside from swapping out stocks, etc.)

That would be the cheaper route, but would also be a lot of work to do it right. He may not want to go through all that hollowing out and tweaking.

Yeah, I'd rather not...I'd like to purchase something pretty much ready to shoot, minus putting in a bullet button or whatever.

I've got a GSG-5, solid little gun. Yeah, it's from a company that has made airsoft, but it's a fun toy.

my vote is GSG-5 (and yes, I do own AKs)

because the point of .22LR is cheap cheap cheap plinking fun. Buying the gun and tax stamp is not much (if any) more than what some guys put into their 10/22's... So why not? It's still recockulously cheap to shoot, and with the SBR, it looks tits.
