This started yesterday, I tried to boot up my MBP and got a grey screen for about 10 min before it booted into OS X.

Today it won't boot at all, its just hung up at the grey screen. I've left it sitting once for 30 min, tried again and let it sit 2 hrs, and I'm on my 3rd try and its been sitting for about 30 minutes.

I've reset the SMC and took the battery out about 10 min before my 2nd try.

I'm guessing its the hdd :dunno:

I made an appointment at the genuis bar for Wednesday but I'd like to fix it before then :o - No applecare left :wtc:

Okay, I searched around some more online and got it to boot into safe mode (after about 5 minutes of spinning)...

Now that I got the CD out of my drive I'm going to run the apple hardware test from my restore DVD.

Update: Ran disk permission repair as well as some onyx stuff while in safe mode (didn't run hardware test).

I then tried to restart and it got hung up again, now I can't boot from CD or into safemode :hs:

Have you tried zapping the PRAM a couple times?

Yes, done it about 5 times :hs:

I'm finally back in after letting it sit for about an hour.

I'm just getting all my data and I'm going to try and do a fresh install, but I'm guessing its a faulty hdd, or who knows bc my DVD drive is acting funny too. :hs:

install the OS DVD and run it as if your gonna install the OS. when you get to the first (or second) page of the install screen, go to the menu bar and find "Disk utility" Run "verify disk" to see if the OS or hard drive have any errors. If the HD does have errors, run "repair disk" which should repair the disk/OS.

If it doesn't repair it, or if it reports no errors, then I'm out of ideas.

I actually found out the hdd is covered under warranty from hitachi for 3 years. They are sending me a new one for free and I just have to ship my old one back in the box. Whoohoooo!!!

I purchased he hdd separately from newegg about a year ago. :run:

when I filled out the RMA for my seagate drive, they told me upfront that it was a refurbished drive from thier website

    from Hitachi site

Will I be receiving the same hard drive in return? A: No. You will receive a different hard drive. All data and software on your returned hard drive will be lost. You may be provided with an approved alternate part number if Hitachi GST does not have stock of the same part number. In some cases, the replacement product will be made using new and/or serviceable used parts. If the defective drive is part of a RAID environment, please contact the Support Center in your geography.

Sounds like a refurbished drive to me, but you never know.

Got it to start after waiting about 2 hrs, but now I can't get it to eject the CD in the drive. I tried all the normal things (holding mouse during startup), tried ejecting through itunes and terminal.

Is there another way to force eject my CD drive? Thanks.
