My grandfather's Alzheimer's has progressed pretty far so my grandmother wants me to get some pictures of him before he's completely clueless and wasted away. I took this one outside a little while ago. Comments? Criticism?

    seems under exposed to me.

Did you use flash? Background is meh.

no flash - natural light. it doesn't look dark to me :dunno: maybe it's my monitor. maybe it's yours :noes:

what would you suggest for a background? i didn't want anything distracting, and the tall bush was the only thing around the house that would qualify.

Personally, i would have used flash but maybe it's my monitor. :dunno:

and backgrounds are subjective to what you have available. If I had to use that as a back drop, I would have gone down a few stops (provided you could).

    What lens?

    28-80 f/3.3-5.6. This shot was at 60mm

I should have used my 50 f/1.8 so I could have kept the DOF low - definitely. But it was a spur-of-the-moment decision and the 28-80 was on my body so I went with it.

TBH, I hardly ever shoot portraits so I'm not totally sure what I'm doing :dunno:

it doesnt look underexposed to me at all, but it could use some "pop" in post process, but nothing too much.

honestly im not a fan of high contrast pics in general, and I dont think your edit looks bad at all. It could use a tad unsharpen mask or something though, to give it that subtle pop. something like amount 10-25, radius 32, threshold 1.

    totally.

better? the differences are subtle, but I did what you suggested plus I slightly lightened a few shadows on my grandmother's face + a little saturation bump. very slight - just to bring out skin tones

if he would have done a full body shot, you would be complaining that it isnt a tight enough crop.
