I just got this gun from my grandparents house. Neither of them are still alive, and I think it was my grandfathers. My parents don't know anything about it though. Can anyone tell what it is? The only kind of logo or anything on it that I can find so far is in the third pic.

It's 6.5mm Japanese Type 38 Arisaka missing the dust cover. Receiver markings are a little strange.

Yeah, I'm 90% sure he was in the navy though. He died something like 10 years ago, and we lived a few hours away so I really only saw him a few times/year :( Ill definitely try to find some more info though

Arisakas make for interesting little guns. Your is a little wierd just because I dont recognize the marking on the receiver and it looks like it never had the mum placed on it...

But I also havent researched Jap rifles in years.

I have one of those. It was my grandfather's also. He was in the Navy. It's in pretty good shape. Has the dust cover, even the bayonet.

I found out that my grandfather was definitely in the navy, and was in japan. There was a letter that he wrote to his family from japan when he was somewhere around hiroshima about 12 days after the bomb. I'd like to figure out what the marking on the receiver is.

Someone on another forum posted this about the marking
"According Honeycutt/Anthony "Military rifles of Japan" this symbol can be found on training rifles only, but meaning unknown."

    Interesting.

Guess that's why it never received the Mum and there's no other markings or serial number like you say.

I took the trigger off and finally got it. There was a metal ball in there which was keeping it from coming out. I can't tell if the ball was part of it or not, but I dont see it in anywhere here http://www.surplusrifle.com/arisakatype38/maintenance.asp

I would be after her to locate it. It is family history, and could be something to hand down.
