    :hyper: :noes:

I went down to http://www.powkickboxing.com/ in Chicago, IL and signed up for a free class to try it out. The facility there is pretty large, with a ring and mats and all that other stuff you would expect. It's about $130/month for unlimited use and they have different types of classes going on every day

    BJJ
    Krav Maga
    Boxing
    Muay Thai
    MMA specific stuff
    etc

I wish they had more Muay Thai stuff, but maybe somewhere else around here does, or maybe I can partner with some other people interested in MMA/sport fighting to work in more striking :dunno:

    should be fun :wavey:

Oh, I'm 5'10" 220lb and looking to lose another 15 or so to help speed/endurance... 28 years old and been playing football/rugby basically my whole life... I dont 'think' im too old to get into this and be a decent fighter in a couple years, but what do you think?

    :mamoru:

I'm just doing it for fun/exercise. how good I am at MMA will probobly determine how much I get into it. I'm hoping I like it a lot and pick up on it pretty quickly, then maybe get in some amature events in 6 moths to a year out :dunno:

    and...
ive heard that he does :eek3: :x:

shouldnt one be in very good shape cardio wise, before taking such a class? so they dont waste classes building up there conditioning?

im in decent cardio shape, but need to improve a lot so I wont gas out. Why would I be 'wasting' classes? The classes will help my conditioning and ill pick up the skill sets along the way.

Nope, class is a great place to work out. you won't be "wasting" anything.

that was sweet.. it was open rolling night, which isn't really for people like me who've never done anything like this before, but the instrcutor was cool and paired me and the other new guy up with an experienced guy to show us some stuff. (the other new guy was a ex-special forces dude who works for the DoD now :eek3: )

i did one five minute round with the vetern guy, he almost had me with a couple locks on my arm, but i was a lot stronger than him and either slipped out of them of he couldn't crank it at all

i did a round with the other new guy too, it was a lot less controlled, obviously, but it was good because he was big/strong and in shape, it was funny though, we'd end up in a full guard and both kinda look at each other like, 'well, what now?'

oh so it was no gi night. any chance he was fairly new, or just letting you slip out of the locks/chokes/etc.

yeah, he defintally wasn't going full speed, but you could tell there were a couple that he tried to go for it ... i think the sweat saved me :mamoru:

plus he hurt his finger within the first 15 seconds, so that hampered him some. I dont think he was a super strong fighter, just been around long enough to know what to do here or there, etc.

gotcha. cool, have fun. remember to check your ego at the door. you'll get tapped alot. you'll get owned and dominated alot. just remember you're there to learn at all times. you dont need to stiffen up, lock down, or go crazy mat spaz.

yeah, i got tapped by that other new guy.. he was at least a couple inches taller than me and i ducked my head down (stupid) and jumped over the top of me and threw a choke on, then rolled me by my neck, ouch

i was watching the other guys when I was on the side and yeah, everyone was getting tapped back and forth, it's just a learning experience
