Well I'm getting my 20d in tomorrow, and I need a good walkaround lens for it as I'm taking a trip up to NYC next month. So far I've been looking at the 28-135 IS from Canon, its cheap ($300 used since its the kit lens on the 40d), pretty decent focal range, and good IQ as well. I've also been thinking about just picking up a 28 f2.8 prime and a 50 f1.8 prime and switching between the two as I dont think that a long lens is going to do much good in the city, but I'd probably get tired of swapping lenses all the time.

Any suggestions from people who have visited?

28 135 is soft around the edges, especially at 28mm and 135mm. it's also pretty slow (f/5.6) at 135 mm. Not worth buying.

    Tamron 17-50 for ~ $430 is a better value.

i walk around with my 70-200 mostly, but what you're most likely looking for is something like the tammy 28-75 F/2.8 XR Di

I walk around with my 24-105 f/4 IS L. I think im going to sell it in favor of a 24-70 f/2.8 L or a set of primes.

how is the 28-75 as a general lens? i keep going back and forth between that and the 17-50. i have a 50 1.8 now, and i want something with more reach than that, but at the same time i think i want to be able to go fairly wide too. hopefully i will be getting a new lens and at least 1 flash to play with off camera flash in the next month or so, assuming i can make up my damn mind. :o

its great, but you have to find the right focal length for you, thats why the term walk around is so :greddy:

i'm not a fan of the term either. but i guess maybe i should just find someplace local that has both lenses and will let me take some photos with each one on my camera. if only there was a way to combine them both into a 17-75 2.8 :x:

I was thinking around $910. PM me for more info /nego if you want it. Its a super super sharp copy. It's just not what I need anymore. I'm shooting more low light action stuff (plays, editorial stuff for the campus paper, concerts, etc) and the IS can only do so much. Its a great lens.
