Cooling systems suck, and will need to be replaced maybe every 70k (at the very least, inspected). Suspension parts will wear out and need to be replaced. Motors and trannys are really good in these cars. You can update the headlights and taillights to 01+ for pretty cheap.

    What does "e-tested" mean?

haha, it sucks plain and simple. That and it's mostly cheap plastic. But I have a 525i so the cooling issue isn't as big a deal. (Obviously I6 makes less heat than a V8)

Otherwise the E39 is a kick ass awesome car. easily one of the best I have owned.

Are you serious? I found a white one  but it's a 528i... I had read on bimmerfest that you could get replacements that are not plastic... or something to that effect...

The cooling system doesn't "suck", it simply needs to be replaced as a preventative maintenance, same as my other German cars in it's class. I wouldn't worry about going with an aluminum radiator. I upgraded my whole cooling system for under 400 bucks with coolant etc. If you're mechanically inclined, it's not that hard.

When you have a fine german machine, that runs circles around other car, you expect them not to cut too many corners.

Pentosin makes a pink coolant (G12) that is designed to be plastic-friendly. You might want to have the coolant flushed and replaced with that if you're worried about the coolant system.

The pink stuff is compatible with the orange stuff, just so you know. The only problem is the orange stuff is nice to aluminum, but not to plastic.

Some people say the 530 handles better since it has less weight in the front. 01s are better due to the updates too!

Plus V8's use a recirculating ball steering vs the I6's rack and pinion.

my wife drives around a 545i and it has been great for us. economy depends on more how you drive it, we regularly get 20mpg. the 545 is also a 4.4 but it makes 325hp vs the 280 in the 540. it is much more sporty than the MB E420 she had before

Hot cars. I had the oppurtunity to be around an 01+ 535i and that car was a champ. Everything was solid as a rock and was even perky for the smaller engine.

    Someday I'll snag an M5.
