my nebighorhood is going to shit. my next door nebighor was robbed last year, he had to chase them out of his house and almost got shot. i want to start collecting guns but i also want something that is practical for home defence. i have my fathers 1897 winchester 12 gauge but i try not to shoot it too much as it is a very old gun, its also a very long gun and i couldnt see myself getting it out quickly and being able to move well with it.

i hear good things about the remmington 870, i went to my gunstore and handled one, and i liked it, but what others should i be shopping for. also, do 20gauge guns have alot of stopping power?

Target shooting and defense do not go together.

It's my belief that you should practice most with whatever you carry/use for home defense. Don't know is that's correct, but that's how I feel.

Get a Mossberg 590. They are better than the Remington 870 in my opinion. This is the 14" version, but they make a 16" that you can buy at any decent gun store without ATF $200 bribe approval:

If you don't have alot of money and want a good defense shotgun you can get a Mossberg Maverick for around $190. They have them at Wal-Mart, though they might have to order the 16" version in for you.

you can shoot trap/skeet with a longer barrel. Mossberg makes barrel's for the 870 that cost less than the ones Remington makes. You could get the 870 Express Magnum witht he 28 inch barrel, and get an 18" aftermarket barrel and use that for defense.

The 870 I posted above has an 18" barrel and a 2 shot factory extension.

I know, but if he want's to shoot skeet, it's gonna be hard to do with an 18" barrel. That is why I suggested the 870 Express Magnum with the longer barrel, but I guess either way he can get a new barrel, long or short.

you are talking about skeet shooting? You cant set up a shotgun at like a 25-100yd target like you can a rifle, I guess that is what I was asking

FYI, 18" for Shotguns, 16" for Rifles for SBS/SBR :nono:

  22. Norinco 98. Almost an exact copy of the Remington 870 and it has never failed me. I paid $130 for mine a few years ago.

I'd go with either the 870 or a Winchester 1300 Defender.

I'd go with the 870. Mine had withstood the test of time and rough treatment. There's a reason many (most) law enforcement agenices go with the 870 ;)
