It's not really response time i mean it's a big factor but i want quaility to. Id on't want something thats going to havea ton of dead pixals in 2 years and i also don't want to have to take it back because it ahs more than 8 when i open it up

Well if you want a 17 i'd go for Samsung, personal preference but i know others will have different opinions.

Go look at them in person and see what you like aesthetically and picture quality wise.

Samsung/Viewsonic/BenQ actually all offer 8ms LCD's now though I personally haven't seen them in large supply yet.

Around what response time do LCDs become just as good as CRTs for gaming? Or is there even an LCD yet that is as good as a CRT for gaming? My current monitor is on its last legs so I'm starting to look around for a new one. I'd love to get an LCD but my main concern is gaming so I'll go with a CRT if I have to.

I have a 25ms 17" LCD and dont know why everyone complains about about response time. I dont notice anything dramatic with ghosting or anything.

Well the figure I heard is CRT's are <1ms response so LCD's still have a ways to go to that, but the 8ms and 12ms screens are getting closer
