I'm looking into buying a laptop and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. It'd be a speced out laptop of whatever brand but I'm really looking for one that doesn't put a lot of extra junk into it like Dell does. Also, if I had a copy of Windows XP, would it recognize the devices on the laptop same as a desktop? Thanks in advance.

I hear great things about Dells, but you say you don't want one... Toshiba seems to be a reliable name, and I like those tiny Sony ones (I love tiny computers and such :o)... I also really like the Mac laptops, but I suppose you want a windows machine.

Since when does Dell put extra junk on it? With the Inspiron line, the worst you'll get is Works Suite, Music Match, and their photo editing software. Just uninstall them. Its way less crap than other brands. If you go through the small business sales department, you can get it even cleaner.

Installing XP is pretty easy. Just boot from the CD and install. It should recognize most or all of the hardware. Doesn't matter if its a desktop or laptop. Same deal. If something isn't recognized, just go to Dell's web site, enter your service tag number, and get the drivers.

Ah, thanks for the input guys. Also, any experience with the new Tablet PC's? Good, bad, whatever.

I highly recommend Dell. I've played with an Acer tablet which seemed very nice (the handwriting recognition software is actually quite good, and that should be the same for all XP Tablet PC's). The biggest drawback for me would be the inability to write math equations, which basically nullifies most of the benefits of a tablet over a laptop for me (note-taking). Seems to me a fun toy, but not enough extra functionality to justify extra cost. Although technically someone could come out with a good math software package.

Dell doesn't add much extra junk to their PCs. No more than any other OEM maker at least. I recently got a 4150 and love it. Wouldn't go back to a desktop now.

I've had my Inspiron 8200 since september and i love it. If you have the cash and are a video/graphics person GET A POWERBOOK. My friend Matt just got one and it is amazing (not to mention that it is the nicest looking laptop on the market). If you want windows, get a Dell.

I bought my sister an Inspiron 4150 from Dell.

Although the pre-package software I can do without (AOL :ugh: ), it's otherwise a great laptop for the non-technical person.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 and it did not come with a lot extra junk. I uninstalled some stuff and it has been very good, too. Decent tech. support, IMO. Not perfect, but no one's is anymore.

I got a dell too. Although, it's belong to my work it's still pretty much mine. I put XP on it and it found everything, and continues to run great. Now Unlike Compiled Monkey, I couldn't just use my laptop for everything. I hate how small the screen is and the max resolution for the screen is.

I use my lappy for everything too, but the resolution is 1600x1200 (15"). :)
