Maxtor's powermax utility isn't working, and I suspect one of my drives might be failing. One made a horrific noise the other day and I just had a total freeze-up, which In my experience means that a hard drive needs replacing.

Try Seagate's utility. It will usually work on any drive.

Seagate's Seatools will definately work with Maxtor drives because Seagate now owns Maxtor, but it will also work with other drives like Samsung, WD and Hitachi.
If it's dying, the Seatools will let you make a complete copy of it as long as you have another blank drive the same size or larger. That part of the software is based on the Acronis software.

hddhealth good tool to use to test the drive, but it'll drive you F'ing nuts if you run it all the time. Alerts you to temp changes, spin up time changes, speed changes... annoying after a while on a drive that is on the way to shitsville.
