    Eh?
I'm trying to get my brother a good birthday/Christmas gift. I figured I'd ask the military crew since you guys probably have some idea of what his daily life is like. :)

He spends more time on the ship than not, he's single without kids and his disposable income is quite large in proportion to his needs so he always buys whatever he wants for himself. This makes it just about impossible for me to get him a meaningful gift, since when I ask him what he wants he invariably says, "I dunno". I'd like to get him something useful that he can use or keep on board or at home, but since I don't really understand how things work on the ship I'm at a bit of a loss. I don't want to get him something that will just gather dust on a shelf.

He's not on deployment now although I think he's scheduled to deploy in the early half of next year. If anyone can offer gift ideas or insight into what ship life is like, or list some things I should definitely NOT get, I'd appreciate it! :hsd:

Unfortunately I think he has both. :hs: I think the ship has outlets, but I'd imagine that anything with the potential for communication would be forbidden while at sea... someone correct me if I'm wrong...

He's a "communications expert" if that helps. He can't tell us anything about what he does.

on a serious level, I think a good gift would be a gaming laptop. I'm sure the ships could have a LAN set up or someone has routers out there for network gaming.

Although this is not out yet, this would be a bad ass set up:

A portable DVD player is nice to have on the ship. There are outlets on the ship DarkP, and although I've heard that they have them in each individual rack on some, we don't have that luxury on the Lincoln. :wtc: an iPod or PSP is also great if you find out he doesn't have one.

 That's awesome! Stocking stuffers +1! Maybe I should get him a fleshlight :eek3:

I know for sure he's got a gaming laptop; he's a CounterStrike fiend and he lugs it about with him everywhere. I didn't think about the portable DVD player though; that's a good one - thanks. :)

Assuming he's got a gaming laptop, I'm sure he's got a dvd player in there.

Maybe get him a good set of head phones. Or maybe a set of little speakers for his laptop so his ship mates can watch movies with him and hear a little better.

If he already has a laptop, don't bother buying a portable DVD player, because most laptops nowadays already play DVD's.

Hickory Farm gift pack thing. I just got one form my mom. Wasd the greatest gift I have ever received in my life. Dont realize how much you miss those things when you havent had a good meal in a few months. Headphones would be good. Think of it like jail, If he cant use maybe he can trade it for something he can. If he is overseas American smokes are always good too. Stupid Japan and there charcole filters taste funny. Condoms are always good for port visits also.

I don't care how many features it has... it looks like a girls watch.

Timex, Seiko, and a bunch of other companies make similar "pda" watches that don't look like they're for a girl who works at an art museum.

do not buy the MSN watch... I am quite sure he probably has a cellphone, and most places where you hang out on a ship, he wont get signal for either. A plain watch is fine.
    In no real order.

    1. Gift certificate
    2. Hickory farms Idea
    3. Nice slippers and a few nice WARM PJ's
    4. Nice warm blanket
    5. mag subscription(though these disappear 10% of the time before you get them).
    6. Small poker chip set
