KA BARs are only issued to those billets that are issued a pistol, ie, Staff NCOs, or Officers. Occasionally other billets will be issued pistols due to special requirements. So the answer to your question of them being standard issue is ... sort of. A KA BAR is always a good idea for a gift, or a gift card to the local gunstore would be good, too, and would cover your bases in case he already has a KA BAR

Are you looking for something he can actually use or something for show?

If you want to get him something he can use, he'd probably be better of with a nice heavy-duty folder. Possibly something from Emerson Knives, Benchmade (something from their Black Class), or maybe Kershaw if you want something a little cheaper. If you are really set on a fixed-blade check out the Ontario RAT line or maybe Fallkniven.

No, I like this because it's more commemorative of his service.

I should try to find out if he already has a Ka-Bar though.. that could suck if he already had one.

Well he's no longer in Iraq and doubtful he will return.

Well in that case, go with one of the fancy ones. Even if he already has one it's probably just a basic one, and you can never have too many knives.

I would say that if this is a gift to say thanks and commemorate his service, the second one would be great. I wouldnt worry about him already having one as this is one that isnt really meant to be used anyway.
