It seems like the plot of everything I read online or see reviews for has the same plot and static characters. Can anyone recommend a good book or movie focusing on gay male characters that actually has some depth?

the first gay book series that I read was the "B-Boy Blues" series by James Earl Hardy, and it was pretty good, albeit overtly sexual (which didn't sit well with some queers). Or I really loved the E. Lynn Harris "Invisible Life" series. Although they are both a lil older...

I believe this is what you're looking for:

    http://www.lambdalit.org/

Lots of the books are available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc.

Thanks for referring me to that site. Although, the only book on that list which really intrigues me is A Boy's Own Story. From the first 4 or 5 pages it sounds promising; I'm gonna have to pick that one up I think.

As far as movies are concerned, you have these great movies (These are my personal 5-star rated gay-themed movies):

Beautiful Thing (a classic MUST-SEE for every gay person)
Forgive and Forget (depressing, but deep)
Ma Vie En Rose (My life in pink - it's a great movie!!)
Love! Valour! Compassion! (a must see)
Trick (not too deep, but a story about finding love unexpectedly)
Flawless (Talk about deep - Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant in this)
Come Undone (I can't remember what this is about, but I market it "Five Stars" on my list)
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert (seeminly stupid, but it ends up being quite deep once you get to know the main characters)
Beaches (ok, this one isn't gay, but it might as well be)
Relax... It's Just Sex (This one is funny, deep, moving, everything...)
Velvet Goldmine (Not too deep, but a GREAT gay movie)
Philadelphia (deep, in a depressing way)
Soldier's Girl (DEEP!!! I loved this movie)
The Broken Hearts Club (not too deep, but a story about being gay and it not being an issue whatsoever)
    Metrosexuality (fun and funny...)
Priest (deep defined - I watched this with a bunch of friends and we discussed it like a "book group" only about this movie)
    Bedrooms and Hallways (GREAT MOVIE!)
Lilies (very deep, and such a moving movie - I want to buy this movie)
    Far From Heaven
Like It Is (A boxer and a record producer fall in love, conquering odds)
Jeffrey (deep movie about dealing with dating in the world of AIDS)
    Defying Gravity (light, but fun)
I Think I Do (light dating movie)
    Finding North (good movie)
    Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss
    Longtime Companion

My Four Star Movies that you might like:

    When Love Comes (sorta deep)
    Europa Europa (German)
And The Band Played On (classic)
I Shot Andy Warhol (disturbingly deep)
Just One Time (not deep at all, but cute)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (deep!)
Kiss Me Guido (not even remotely deep, but cute)
All Over The Guy (love this movie - not that deep)
Get Real (coming of age story)
Edge of Seventeen (another coming of age story)
Paragraph 175 (incredibly deep documentary about gay Jews during Hilter-era)
The Trip (very good movie - very sad, but so good)
Urbania (so deep, I'm not sure I liked it or didn't like it. Turns out I think I liked it)
A Very Natural Thing (filmed in 1973, this is the first gay-themed movie that portrayed gays as something NOT to be ashamed of)
    Wild Reeds
Love and Death on Long Island (deep, about an aging man obsessed with Jason Priestly)
    The Opposite of Sex
    The Journey of Jared Price
Coming Out (a man's struggle to come out of the closet)

Of list 2, I liked these (except Hedwig, which I LUVED).

Oh, and I had the same feelings about Urbania, but after showing it to my friends (thus seeing it twice), I realized I liked it...a lot.

    Me too

"So, I'm sitting there lickin' his balls and the bastard cums in my eye! You ever had cum in your eye, Gabriel? It BUUUUUURRNNSSS!!!!"

God, I love that entire scene...

"Gabriel? As in 'Blow Gabriel, Blow?' "

And, of course you can't forget "Como te gusta me pinga?"
And Tori Spelling is a genius in that movie.... Her cheese-fries scene is brilliant.

wow sam, that's quite a list. I'll have to check some of those out. I'm not big into lesbian flicks though. Anyway, I'm almost done with A Boy's Own Story. Pretty good so far. However, I can't decide whether I'm glad or disappointed it isn't a little more sexually explicit.

"I Shot Andy Warhol" is the only lesbian themed movie... and it's not so much lesbian as disturbed. It's just a deep movie.

    The other movies are gay-male-oriented.

    Kissing Jessica Stein (critically acclaimed)
It's In The Water (popular hit)
Desert Hearts (didn't see this, but it's rated high on Netflix)
Bound (all my lesbian friends love this movie)
Swimming (with Lauren Ambrose from Six Feet Under - Love huh!!!)
    Show Me Love
    Treading Water
    2 Girls In Love

(there's more, but they get bad... just really bad acting and storyline)

Augusten Burroughs writes some funny gay-themed stuff. Funny and disturbing.
