I'm looking for a 40G external HD and have found a spectrum of prices from 100 to 300 bucks. I'm wondering how much brand matters and if anyone has a good deal in particular they know of off hand.

Thanks for any help anyone could provide.

probably would be cheaper to purchase an external hard drive case ($30) and a hard drive of your desire 120 gb is around $100 new now i think.

look at newegg.com for the enclosures.

a 40GB drive (external) shouldn't be more than $60. Likewise, you should be able to at least tripple your space for $120 total.

I have never heard of fantom, so I would say NO.

Stick with Western Digital and Seagate. They are the only two drives you are allowed to buy.

You can get both the enclosure AND drive from www.newegg.com. As for warranty, remember that you get a BETTER warranty with a seperate enclosure and drive (3 year) vs. the 1 year with the prefab... And with the custom one, you can pick exactly the speed, cache, and size drive you need.

ok awesome, thank you very much. I had no idea which brands to go with and fantom was half the price of everything else. Thus, I imagined they were more than likely trash. I appreciate your help.
