HP is dropping their prices on most of last summer's printers now that the new ones are coming in, so keep an eye out for sales and the such. Last year's prominent printers were the 3820 which is $69 right now and the 5550 which I believe is $99 right now.

Get the 5550. I have it. Good printer. I think I paid about $130 last winter.

:werd: I paid 150 way back last fall.... but the 5550 > * in its price range for output quality.

But then too I have a laser I use for text, deskjet gets used for color stuff only.

I think the Canon i450 would be a good choice in that price range.
Good quality and lower cost per page running costs than the HPs.

Ditto. Laser for everything but photos and the occasional web page I want printed in color.

Until the heads clog and you have to toss it. Ditto on the Epsons. HPs can run for a very long time because you're constantly replacing the heads.

Can't really go wrong with an HP printer. We just bought an HP all-in-one and its quality is very good (suprisingly good for an inkjet).

As long as you use it regularly that's not going to happen and even if you use it less frequently there are good head cleaner utilities in the drivers to unclog the heads and if you eventually do need to replace the heads then they are easily taken out and replaced and the long term cost will probably still be lower than replacing the ink cartridges all the time with the HPs because like you said you are always replacing the heads.
