I am going on a trip to las vegas in a few months. I am going with the 30d instead of the 40d to save a little bit of money for some better glass, may make an upgrade at some point or when the 30d goes bad on me. I figure that it's not a HUGE step up and in the situation I'm in, that $400 can be used for some hardcore gambling. Any recommendations on a cheap wide zoom? I am considering the tamron 28-75 f/2.8, but I don't think the 28mm will be wide enough

Werd, I have both this and the 28-75 but to be honest I use the 28-75 a lot more often as "walk around" lens. However, if I were going to get just one it would be the 17-50, especially if I were going to vegas.

the 17-50 would be good but a 12-24, 11-16, or 10-20 would probably be a better choice as you'll have very limited room to get all of the building/statues/etc in the shot...especially with everyone walking around in front of you.
