What is a good, cheap and reliable brand of DVDR? Any particular place good for buying them?
You can get a Sony DRU-710A from bestbuy, circuit city, walmart, etc. for pretty cheap. I have one and it's a really good burner, dual layer too! They go for around $110-$130.
for $110 you got ripped the fuck off for that sony.
The ones everyone seems to recommend are the NEC 3500 and the Pioneer 108, both of which are dual-layer (if I'm not mistaken) and can be had for $50 or so.
Bestbuy's prices are just higher than some place like Newegg

You're looking for a DVD burner or DVDR media?
I'm not sure what DVDR media is best.
As for a burner the Lite-On SOHW 1633S got a damn good review at Tom's Hardware when stacked up against 9 other DVD+/-RW 16x DL drives, with the NEC ND-3500A getting the top spot. It faired about the same as the Sony that Bigwrenn mention, in some things better and others slightly worse.
And Newegg has it for $30 less than the Sony too http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-960&depa=0 (retail version)
Or you can save $6 more for the OEM http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-959&depa=0
I have an LG one and I would not recommend it.
never did like LG drives, myself.
Nec 3520/3500 > *.*
Sorry to say, but I'd vote for the Sony. I have one of the old DRU-500AX's and it has never let me down. I would definitely buy one again.
Just remember you get what you pay for.
