The last few weeks i've picked up running again and it feels great, both mind and body, like I used to in highschool. Since i'm running again, why not go further? I've been doing push-ups and sit-ups everyday and now moving into the gym at college, which is great. I've always wanted to get in shape and now i'm doing it.

My one big beef with myself is i've always had a flabby mid-section, no matter what I ate, or did excercise-wise. A friend of mine who was severely overweight lost quite a bit of weight by going vegetarian, and i've been considering it. What are the pros and con's to going vegetarian and will it help me achieve a more toned mid-section? I'm looking it up on my own but just wanted to see what ot'ers think.

You dont need to be veg to lose weight and it certainly doesn't help if the rest of you diet sucks. I've been veg for about 20 years and have always had some sort of belly and average fat layer. I am trying to change that now though.

Cons? How do you plan on getting your protein? Beans and legumes? Hope your friends don't mind someone who carries around a giant brown cloud of stench where ever they go.

You are better off cutting out a large portion of your simple carbs and replacing with more complex ones while upping your protein intake and lowering fat intake. Going vegetarian does not make you healthier and is a realllly bad idea for those who are active. There are few truly successful vegetarian/vegan athletes, because it makes eating to perform much more complex.

you don't have to be a meathead to understand that eating properly and working out will get you a good body. Being vegetarian is borderline unhealthy not to mention extremely:greddy:

just eat healthy, do cardio , and work your abs = no fat midsection

Borderline unhealthy. I love it. Both veg and non veg have the exact same chance of being heathly vs non health.

is it really that hard? Just don't eat fast food at all. Eat chicken, lean beef, tuna fish.. all high in protein and pretty low in calories. Don't eat many carbs. Idk how much you weigh

Oh I absolutely despise 90% of vegans. It can be a healthy lifestyle it's just very difficult. There's a thread on bb.com that has some vegan body builder that seems in pretty good shape.

Go on. Quote from my post history. Show me where I'm trying to be sexually involved with the staff of Everquest. You probably can't find any evidence, because it's not true. You know it's not true. Nobody genuinely thinks it's true. So, in fact, what you're in the middle of is a libelous assault. You're lying for the sake of defamation and I'm going to ask you to discontinue your efforts as such. If you continue, I will submit a complete and formal complaint to the board mods which they will not be able to ignore.

High GI foods are things like bread, sugar, fructose, rice , etc...

Eating these foods causes fluctuations in blood glucose and insulin levels which results in your body storing fat. From my experience most of this fat goes to the mid-section (at least mine).

As lame as it sounds... i would suggest reading "the south beach diet" .. in all my years of bodybuilding it has by far been the most helpful guide to cutting .. even though its target market is soccer moms

This is all pretty interesting but most studies show that low vs high GI diets don't make a difference.
What matters is most importantly as far as body composition goes is the caloric intake, then meeting the minimal reqs for protein and EFAs and then maybe it's time to worry about macro breakdown more precisely.

this may be true for some. For me i was only able to get the belly down with a very strict low GI diet for a series of weeks. Big bellies run in my family ..

can you link me to the article/study?
