    I have:

    5D
    30D
    Canon G10
    24-70L
    70-200L
    50 1.4
    35L
    580EX

Definitely bringing the 5D, G10, and 580EX. Just not sure which lenses to bring. Both zooms? I have a Lowepro Flipside 300 they're all going in so I can definitely carry the 70-200 but it's fucking heavy.

    Help me out OTAP

do you want your shit stolen? then yes, bring all that shit.

    otherwise, bring your widest lens.

what do you need the flash for? have you ever been to NYC?

I just went to chicago. Here's my lightroom meta data stats

Keep in mind, 95% of my 80-200 shots were at the Zoo, going back, I wouldn't have lugged that lens around with me.

unless you're a voyeur and want to zoom in on windows of tall buildings, you would have no need for a long lens.

and wtf flash? unless you're shooting people indoors, leave it at home. take as little with you as possible. and stay safe.

good point about the flash. guess i probably dont need that shit.

5d + 24-70 only? hmm....was thinking that and the 70-200 but may have to reconsider leaving the brick at home.

Travel light. Bring the 5D and the 35L. Don't even need a flash with that combo.

If you want a zoom, take the 24-70L

Im in NYC everyday and I'd say bring a flash. It's not that heavy, it's not that big, but you may end up just needing it. 5D, 24-70, flash, and G10. That's fairly light. Forget the 70-200, I doubt you'll get much use out of it.

I'm assuming you'll be in Manhattan. Check www.yelp.com - that's a really good site for good reviews on mainstream as well as "dive" places to eat in NYC.

    I would bring
    5D
    35L -- your main lens.
24-70L -- might not need this
    580EX

    and a G10

5D and 35L does amazing work, even still you'll probably haul out the big rig just once or twice.

Next trip, you'll leave it all behind and just bring the G10.

Agreed, I could do 99% of my walkaround shooting with just the 35L.

if you have all that gear and don't know what you use, you're useless as a photographer.

exactly...people make NYC out to being this horrible pick-pocket town still and most of that is over with. I carried my camera all over manhattan and up to the bronx strapped to my wrist without any problems.

wow man, all i was doing was asking for opinions. i never said i don't know what to bring or what to use. obviously i'm not going to haul it all with me and i have a good idea of what i want to bring, but i was just trying to opening it up for discussion.

I just got back from NYC..
    Go wide. Wider the better.

I had my zoom with me and I pulled it out of the bag 3 or 4 times, but 90% of the time, I had my 17-40 mounted.

I feel safer in NY than any other major city. I hate walking around a "city" and there's NO ONE around, it feels creepy to me. Any NY street will have 100+ people walking around it

Get a backpack and you can carry a bunch of stuff. I carried three cameras, a flash and a zoom lens for a week around Paris. So what if you only use the zoom and the flash a couple of times?

    Personally, I'd go 5D + 24-70.

just got back yesterday. ended up bringing 5D, 24-70, 70-200, 35L, 580ex. fit nicely in the lowepro flipside 300. i'll post pics tomorrow.

and yeah, i never once felt like i was going to get jacked even while riding the subway system and walking around at night. NYC feels pretty safe. there are cops everywhere, and the people i ran across were pretty friendly.
