My first time going to NY and it's going to be in the middle of Jan. I looked up the forecast and it looks like it's going to be COLD! Especially since I am from So Cal.

What exactly will I need to survive out there?

yea that pretty much sums it up... I'm a couple of hours away, but we get the same stuff... for the week, we are expecting a high of 30, and snow every day... you can expect the same or colder in the middle of January... Seriously, the list above is pretty accurate...

    dress in layers.

buy Under Armour (Or similar) cold weather gear, and then layer a fleece, then a jacket.

When it's cold outside it's best to have as little skin showing as possible. Definitly find a good, warm winter hat, beanie, whatever. Oh, and thick socks and water-proof boots if you'll be treading through any snow, slush, all that good stuff.

Trust me, I grew up in Maine.

Don't plan on being outside for long, that's all.

Just get an insulated coat, some nice gloves then.

take a taxi near by so you don't have to walk far, and huddle in the line for body heat :mamoru:

beanie and scarf and gloves but i don't really wear the gloves i just put my hands in my coat pockets and they stay really warm

How bad is the NYC party scene during winter time?

I'm not sure, ask Phlab or someone else who lives in NYC currently. I just went there to visit, and we went to some clubs in the meatpacking district, which ended up being lots of fun. I'm sure the party scene there is pretty rampant, since clubs are open til 4am...

i don't really go to clubs, but i did go to one around this time last year and it was still packed

i do know the bar i usually go to in the city was dead because all the hot fashion institute girls had winter break before us :wtc:
(this is mainly a college bar though)

there is no type of weather, season, event, etc..... that affects the NYC party scene in any way. 24/7/365.
