Definitely in 9mm, and conceal carry is a possibility, so a subcompact or compact frame would be ideal. I'm just going to hold them for now, I don't know of a range that rents guns around here. I'm leaning towards a G19 right now, but I'll hold an XD9 and see how I feel about.

Also one thing I never understood about handguns is fixed vs adjustable sights. I'm thinking about getting night sights, so does it matter if I get fixed or adj?

edit: Also looking at glocks on Bud'sgunshop there's lots of different abbreviations... FS, GNS, SFS, etc. What do all those mean?

If you're looking for a CCW, look at the G19 instead of the 17. Fixed sights on a defensive handgun are fine.

Ah. Then good choice. Pick up and hold an M&P for shits and giggles. P99's are nice too.

Should I even bother going down to the gun store or should I just buy one at Bud's? :o Any other place to get a better price?

Go to the gun store. Buy one there, support the local economy, keep your local gun store in bussiness. Even if it costs you a little more it's worth it just to do the right thing, seeing and handling the exact gun your getting, and have it now.

All kinds of horror stories about ordering on the net. Sometimes there are big time delays. You still need to have it shipped to your local FFL, etc. Unless it something your local gun shop doesn't have, get it locally.

Another question for glocks specifically... Why are the 19's sometimes 10rd and sometimes 15 rd capacity? And what's all this GNS/FS/etc mean?

15 rounders for the free states, 10 for the commies. GNS = Glock Night Sights. FS = Fixed Sights.

CA people get fucked for transfers.

Odds are a local ship will be able to come reasonably close to internet pricing on glocks so as long as you can find a non-douche filled shop you might as well buy there

transfer fees vary from shop to shop. In so cal there are places that are $35. Then there are places that want 20% of the value of the gun with a $100 minimum or a $10 a day storage fee for the 10 day waiting period.

There are some FFL's that do not want to do transfers because of the liability, hassle, and that it just doesn't make them any money. No problem just don't use them.

Some places make most of their money from transfers such as coin shops, pawn shops, or garage FFL's. You just need to shop around. One good place to look is the local ipsc/uspsa match. People there will know of some small time FFL who has very reasonable transfers.

Again I prefer to buy from my local shop or from somebody I know. I have very high standards for the fit on my guns and want to inspect all kinds of things before I buy. Such as slide to frame fit, barrel to slide fit, front end shake, feed ramps, chambers, etc.
