In keeping with all the other "going to" threads I'm seeing posted lately, I figured I'd do the same.

So heading to Le Mans for the 24 Hours, here is what I'm taking. Am I missing anything? :noes:

    3 Nikon D3 bodies
    14-24 f/2.8 Nikkor
    24-70 f/2.8 Nikkor
    70-200 f/2.8 afs vr Nikkor
    500 f/4 vr Nikkor
    2 SB900 speedlights
    1.4x Nikkor converter
All above in a Think Tank Airport Security roller as carry on.

    Also,
    Gitzo carbon monopod
    Manfrotto carbon monopod (backup)
3 Aquatech rain covers and eyeypieces
    Alpinstars photo vest
    All in checked bag.

    15" Macbook Pro
100 gig Seagate external drive for backup
30 gigs worth of CF cards (Sandisk and Lexar) in Think Tank Pixel Pocket Rocket CF wallets
    Nikon camera battery charger
AA battery charger w/12 AA batteries
    6 electric outlet adapters
Other misc. computer and photo related items
All above in Think Tank Urban Disguise 60 laptop/photo bag as carry on.

So am I missing anything? What would you guys recommend I take? ;)

Pic for fun from last year:

I made it to Fontana when Super GT(JGTC at the time) came to the US. Wish I had a camera back then.

Depends. On track, the 500 and 70-200 for sure, usually one with the 1.4 on it. Then will sometimes take one of the wides if in a place that I can use it.

When working the pits, usually the 14-24 and the 70-200. Sometimes will take the 500 if working a pit lane that I can shoot at a distance from the island which is the area between the pit lane and the track.

Use the 24-70 usually for team shots and other paddock work.

Sorry man, I already have a trusty sidekick, but not even taking her this time. Credentials are very hard to come by and even though we've been for five years now, getting only two credentials (writer and photog) are still always a crapshoot.

Here is a photo taken with me standing right where that Mercedes landed.

It is a little sketchy standing right next to the track with the cars going by at 200 mph only feet away. A rush that can porbably only be matched by actually being out there and actually doing the driving.

so, how did you get into this line anyway... and how does one go about getting started? it seems so specialized.

Its quite specialized and unfortunately, proving to be a problem for me now as I'm trying to break out of it solely and get into other types of sports.

Started for me by always growing up at the track and taking photos for fun till someone started offering to pay for them. But its hard to get into as the competition is big, the buyers are few and far between and you really dont get anyone to look at you till you've been around for some time. I was lucky, however, I really want to get into working some other sports and its been tough with only a motorsports portfolio and a few scattered high school sports to show.

I can see how tough it is getting out of it once you're established. Well, you're good at it, and the money seems to be good for you... why leave though, is there bigger money in other sports compared to what you're doing?

I dont want to leave at all, but I want to add additional work in other sports to fill in the down time and supplement the income.

Motorsports is really dependent on the economy and this year is pretty tight and tough. Lots of guys (including me) have lost lots of work this year, so its more important than ever that I'm trying to find additional work. I dont do weddings, I dont want to do portraits and that kind of stuff, I'd like to shoot other sports so that is where I'm looking. But, as in everything, making the contacts is the key and lots of people want to shoot all kinds of sports, I'm in the motorsports scene, I just need to get that break into the other sports cause I know I can shoot it. I mean, I have all the gear, what, it can only be like a year and I'll be as good as any SI shooter...right? ;)
