What do I need to be prepared?

Should I buy more cards...that is my main problem, should I get a card hard drive that I could store my shots with? How much do they go for, assuming they sell these sort of things...I won't have a laptop, just my camera....I wish 1 gig cards were as cheap as dv tapes :hsd:

    This is what I did.

Instead of buying more CF cards i bought a transfer for my Ipod photo. I'm assuming you have an Ipod because everyone does. it cost me about 30 bucks. I have 4GB in cards in 1GB card sizes. When I ran out of space, i would transfer the pics to my ipod (which had 30GB of space left) using the USB cable. In retrospect, i really only needed one 2GB card and a 1GB backup in case something stupid happened. I never took out my original card.

The only bad thing about it, is that if you dont have an ipod slideshow program it wont play back your pics, it just holds them in a storage folder. But they're there.

oh yeah, give it a test run before you leave. I think you have to set up your iPod as an external drive. It's easy though, just an option in the preferences menu and it doesnt effect your music.

It would be alot harder if he's shooting raw (with the language barrier and all), but if he's shooting jpg it should be no problem. While in Italy I found alot of places to dump and burn ( if i was shooting jpg, I wasnt :hs: )

Sensor cleaning tools might be useful too. But he's right, I had my card reader and dumped my files on my friends laptop.

if you find a place that will download them and put them on a CD, make sure it is burned as a data disc. I hate these places who use software in order to view the photos on the disc. Whether its RAW or not, it will work.

but I would definitely agree that a laptop is the best way to go. even if you have to pick up a cheap used one, do it!

I know one spot, where i will be taking 300+ photos every 3 hours is in the boonies of france; but I'll also be filming which will take up most of the time....I'll be there for a week, certainly no internet cafe in town. ah well...I'll figure something out :hs: , got a wedding job tonight though so thats fun :)

laptop is BAD BAD BAD when traveling like that. Get a $200 portable hard drive and you'll be set.

I went to europe for a little over 4 weeks in 2004. I brought my 10d, 5gb microdrive, a couple lenses, and a 60gb portable hard drive. While transfering files took a while since I shot raw, it wasn't a big deal to do it back in the hostel while reading at night or just let it transfer locked up in your bag while you go down to the bar or something. A laptop would have been WAY too bulky, the camera gear was bad enough by itself.

and on the other hand, CF has come down quit a bit in the past couple years. Depending on how much you plan on shooting, a couple $200 4gb cf cards might be a better option.

    i'd suggest 8 1gb cards over 4 2gb or 2 4gb cards.

I used an X's Drive Pro for my trip. It kind of sucked in that it was slow and didn't have great battery life, but it worked pretty well. I'd get back to the hostel for the day, plug the drive into the wall, and lock it all up in my bag while copying. I liked the x's drive because it was ~$120 without a drive and you could put whatever laptop drive in it you wanted. So for about $200 I had a 60gb portable drive. There are tons of them out there these days for a whole range of prices, pick whatever looks good to you.
