i do portrait stuff 99% of the time. already have a couple large shoot-through umbrellas & a smallish softbox.

thought I'd buy their giant (30"x60") softbox, but then realized i've read a lot of good things about the PLM.

is the big advantage of the PLM vs a softbox the 2-3 f-stops more output?

    :dunno:

i think softboxes are way cooler than umbrellas.

In for opinions and experience responses. Considering a softbox myself.

softboxes are softer, easier to control light, way less spill, you can use ND filters and color gels a lot easier

i've only taken my current flashes/stands/ummmbrellas/etc out of my studio (aka basement) a couple of times.

my current softbox is really pretty simple to fold down

+ This doesn't really matter if you're using it in a basement, does it?

Softbox is far more versatile. And if its foldable its just as easy to setup as an umbrella.

I have both, get teh softbox if you dont already have one.

Congrats on the purchase! I would go with the softbox personally. I have used softboxes and umbrellas and I have had better luck with the softbox ;)

I love alienbees, can't wait to get some of my own! (I use my schools) lol
