Good friend of mine plays bass for Bob Schnieder and his band. They're coming into town and playing a venue tonight. She called and asked if I wabted to come see them, and also asked if I could snap some shots.

If I go, I'm going to take the D300 and the 50 1.4 with me more than likely with no flash. Pointers on camera settings to shoot in low lights like this? Never done a show.

My thought was wide open, manual, high ISO. Sound about right? :dunno:

You got everything right except for shooting wide open. Try and stop it down a bit so its easier to get their entire face in focus. Shooting wide open will make it really hard to do so.

Also make sure your shutter speed is fast enough, unless you're going for a blurry look. Don't be afraid to crank up the ISO, grainy pictures are better than blurry ones

Not necessarily. You can shoot 1.4 and get enough in focus depending on your distance. Try it at 1.4 and then just check it on that pimp-daddy LCD the D300 has. If youre DOF is too small, you can consider moving back and making your subject smaller while increasing your DOF, -OR- stop down the lens a little to increase DOF while decreasing shutter speed or increasing ISO.

Yeah higher ISO is better than blurry shots!

Also everything Adam said is dead on.

Make sure you shoot raw, a lot of times the lights will mess up the auto wb pretty bad.

I've learned from this experience that white people have NO rhythm when it comes to dancing, despite the dancing shows on TV!!!

all shot at 3200 ISO w/ varying aperture (from 1.4 to 3.5), and 1/90-250 shutter speeds.
