Ok, long story short, my 4 year old computer was built by a friend that used a pirated copy of XP Pro when he built the machine. Anyways, I want to install a legit version (in order to get updates and such.. SP1 for the lose)

How can I go about doing this? Obviously I need to get the legit copy, but do I just order any old xp pro install disc from Newegg or what? The last thing I want to do is reformat the computer and lose all my stuff.

Anyways, I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me in order to get legit :noes:

buy legit xp, run magical jelly bean, change key, get legit updates

although if your xp installation is really 4 years old, it is probably running like shit, fresh format and reinstall is always nice

Your biggest worry with SP1 is that it pretty much allows how every many trojans onto
your hard drive as can fit.

    :eek3:

If you want to do this the right way, this is not going to be easy.

What I would do, is buy another hard drive to install the os on.
Then install antispyware/antivirus, firewall on the new drive.
Then add the old drive as a slave, and scan the hell out of the drive
before you copy any files over to the new one.

If you can't afford a new drive, or would rather work it out, then here's
    how you could approach that.

    Download these following programs:

    Spybot S&D - antispyware
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
During the install, you want to use the immunize function.

    AVG - antivirus
    http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vi...42.html?part=dl-AVGAntiVir&subj=dl&tag=button

Zonealarm firewall - to monitor outbound traffic
    http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/zonealarm_free_firewall.jsp
You want to turn off the Windows firewall from the control panel before installing this.

You will want to run scans in safe mode. And also, if you've been running SP1 for that
long, then you will almost certainly have to turn off system restore, since it often will
    prevent you from removing malware.

In both methods, I would burn the progs to cd, and install them while the machine is
    disconnected from the internet.

It will depend on which version of XP you had installed - OEM, retail or corp. Generally speaking, pirated versions are corp and it's not a simple matter of swapping the keys to make it legit.

    Fresh install FTW

colleges only sell the latest versions of MS products, so that means Vista and Office 07, and the OSes are only upgrade versions, you cant build a new PC and expect to get the cheap Windows for it

Maybe it depends on the college?

I go to college but its a very small school so I doubt they have anything liek that where I can get XP at a discount.

and Doc, I do have a slave drive attached to that computer. That is actually a good idea to do a straight up fresh install, then copy the things I need over.

I mean, the only things I really need are quickbooks files (which I can just copy over through a thumb drive anyways), my music, pictures, and documents. Game saves and things of that nature can go. I almost never play pc games anymore. The most difficult part of this switch would be finding my copy of quickbooks and reinstalling it (not sure if it is only limited to one machine)

anyways, thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I will do a fresh install once I get some time in the next couple weeks (and obviously xp)

Will newegg still be selling XP after this month or do I have to get it asap?

No matter how small the college is, you should check with the bookstore there.
I think you'll be surprised at what is available even in a small college.

basically, Microsoft will stop selling licenses and stop shipment of boxed copies of XP this June 30.

newegg will probably sell them till they are out of stock.

note that there are rumors of panic buyers and people who plans to stock up and sell it on ebay.
i'd get one asap if i were you.
