Im going to be camping tomorrow for 5 days with my AR and I wont have access to decent gun cleaning solvent between now and when I leave. I do however, have a can of WD-40 in the back of my truck. Will this suffice as a pseudo solvent for cleaning, and a really short lived lubricant?

I use it in the field as an all purpose cleaner/lube. I clean everything when i get home. I dont see or know of any problems using it in small amts.

I'd vote a small bottle of CLP and a boresnake. How much shooting are you really going to be doing? Unless it's a few thousand rounds you shouldn't need to clean.

Oh. You said "AR." For a second I read "AK" and I was wondering why you were worried about cleaning your AK.

I cleaned mine the first day I took it out, but then I said fuck it, I'll wait until it has a problem before I clean it next.

I honestly think pulling the bolt out, spraying and wiping it down with WD40 and swabbing the barrel should suffice until I get home.

Anything wet will do in a pinch, but I fail to see where you'd be roughing it so hard that you could encumber yourself with an AR15 but not a small bottle of CLP.

most gunsmiths cringe when you say "i use wd-40" to clean, there are several pictorials out on the web of why you should not use it, one of which being that it combusts

WD40 would not be my first choice for lube, but say if you had your rifle submersed I'd hose it out with some WD40 (Water Displacement-40).

If you just take care of your rifle, keep shit out of the barrel and keep the ejection port closed when not in use, I wouldn't worry about cleaning at all until I get home.

stop by an autoparts store and get some full synthetic oil and a can of brake parts cleaner and consider your problem not a problem anymore

Main reason is that it functions as a lacquer and builds up with each use. All lubes are combustible with the right conditions.

Go buy a quart of synthetic motor oil and a small bottle, and keep it in the buttstock with a toothbrush.
