I'm looking to take some good shots of the race. I've got a 4 mp canon a520 and haven't really had much time to play around with the settings. What are some things that I will want to remember so I can capture some good photos?

    Rent a d70?

I have no idea... I've never heard of a digital point and shoot delivering on action shots. Good luck though! If there's an apature priority, use it and set it to the lowest setting, to hopefully yield the highest shutter speed in that situation. Ideal shutter is... well, for a dslr it would be 1/500th to 1/750th.
