My friend purchased a domain at godaddy and I purchased hosting space.. how do I get his domain to take people to my hosting space? I have access to his account.

Wha? Why would you use different name servers? You need to access the DNS control within his domain to redirect A records to your hosting space - no need to host the name servers elsewhere.

Except that name servers should be spread across the internet, not housed in one location. There's really not a good reason to host your own name servers if you're just hosting a web site.

I buy my domains at GoDaddy and point them to a hostgator server via custom nameservers. The general idea is that you login to whatever control panel you have for your host and create an add-on domain [using the domain name that you'll be pointing to it] then you login to GoDaddy and point the nameservers. If your hosting account allows multiple domains you should have received nameservers in an email.

I'll say the same thing that I say to my 2 year old nephew, "Use your words".
