My cardio sucks. I hate running. I want to change that.

So I just signed up for a 10k run in May '10.

    :x:

There's a dozen different running training schedules on the net, so I'm researching that now. Any tips/advice?

If you just want to finish it and not beat any records, a 10k isn't all that bad. I knocked out a 5k at a pretty decent pace without any training on top of the shit I normally do. :dunno:

Yeah, screw records. I just wanna go from 'nothing' to 10k.

It's just the idea of doing it, ya know?

Couch to 5k seems like a good introduction to running, idk...

Maybe some HIIT to break up the monotony?

Well it fits in with the whole -- stop smoking (socially, then next thing I know I'm bumming off co-workers -- wtf??) and drop a little weight. I'm currently 6'1 and 215. I'd like to be just under 200 and lean.

I hear you there. I'm 6'1" and about the same weight as well. I just started Couch to 5K and I think it's a good re-introduction to running (I haven't since I was 150lbs in high school).

    Give it a whirl: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

i started running labor day and ran my first half marathon December 6th using one of Hal Higdon's training plans.

    http://www.halhigdon.com/10ktraining/10kintro.htm

his plans (esp novice level plans) are designed more to get you to the start line uninjured and to finish the race rather than to win the race so i found it perfect for a starting point.

i never ran cardio, and one day a few weeks into my crossfit stint it called for a 25k.

ran it non stop no problem, you get used to the pain

I'd start with a 5k. See what type of time you're running and set a goal from there.

I'd only advise investing in a good pair of shoes. I use Asics, and would recommend them. If you goal is simply to finish, it's really just about getting through the first mile.

    *edit*

Don't squat heavy the day or two days before the race. I did that before a 10K I ran four years ago and had crippling DOMS, I sat in a bath of hot water for thirty minutes, wrapped my legs, then ran. Do not recommend.

I'd say just do conditioning in general...a 10k at no specific pace whatsoever is a random "hey the weather's nice today" for me and I barely ever just plain run.

Oh and potassium is your friend or you'll very possibly cramp up. I've found a banana and 50 situps before my run can do a world of good sometimes.
