What's the benifits and trade offs? My understanding is the mail doesn't come off the web, or does it. I don't really think I know the concept fully of why this is different from any other free email service.

Gmail DOES currently have POP3 service but since it's still in beta they might charge for it later on, nobody really knows.

I love my gmail account. It is the best online service I've ever used. However, I still use my own mail server. The gmail account is a perfect as a public email. This lets me keep the ones I use for work/personal away from spammers.

..btw, I just got 50 invites on my main gmail account..lol

Close to spam free, 1gb of storage, the Gmail tray notifier, keyboard shortcuts. What's not to like?

I just got a gmail account, figured I may as well see what all the hype is about. I doubt I'll use it much, but it could be handy if I want to store some big files or something :dunno:

i got one when it first came out, but now I don't use it. Their web interface doesn't work behind most content filters and it won't work in Opera. So fuck them.

most content filters (bess, h2h2, websense) block access to gmail.

Maybe because they're intended to prevent people at work or school from doing things they're not supposed to be doing at work or school. Like checking their personal email. Hm, a product that works, how about that.

Because no one uses their gmail account for anything constructive like communicating with teachers, students, coworkers, clients, etc. That would be a ridiculous use for a fast reliable email service that is accessible from virtually anywhere.

    Geez, flippin idiot. :fawk:

I use it for 3 reasons

    3 accounts
    - personal (friends, family)
    - spam
    - web site contact

works great, couldn't ask for more.

great service.... i was skeptical at first as well but ive been using it for about 4 - 5 months now and no spam has reached my inbox. the conversation style is a cool concept as well. once you get your folders and filters setup you'll have a nice system going on.

    death to hotmail :p

I'm not saying they don't, but that's how the designers of those idiotic content filters think. The ones they had at my high school blocked all sorts of things that we wanted to use for perfectly legitimate purposes. I'm just pointing out that there is a reason why gmail is blocked by said filters, and it is in keeping with the reason people purchase and use said filters.

Besides, no respectable company uses gmail (or any web-based email service) for communications with customers, etc.

lol I think everyone got 50 invites ;P

I just noticed a cool "smart feature" with gmail today. I had one of those silly spoof mails pretending to be paypal and them needing me to update my info blah blah blah...anyway for anyone that knows anything it is usually pretty easy to see right through them, but for say, my mom, she would have followed the directions and given away all her details...

Anyway, the point lol, when I clicked on the email it told me in big bright red block "this email does not come from where it claims to....". I thought that was kind of cool and would be useful for your less savvy family/friends lol.
