My friend's dad recently got himself an AR15, and said friend is looking to get him a gift for his new purchase, any good ideas? Of course this is a pickup a gift a few days from the birthday, so anything that can not be picked up walking into a gun shop is out....is he boned?

What does he already have? How much is your friend planning on spending?

so it sounds pretty bare, just a 30 round mag, no scopes or sights yet. He said it had clean slate for mods, whatever that means. Probably looking to keep it less than 100$.

since you cant exactly order anything, just go to the local gun shop, look around and see whats on sale or is a good deal... sounds like other than the gun ammo and a mag or two the guy doesn't have anything so just about anything would work. like MG said see what he plans on using it for and buy him something that he would end up needing.

mags, ammo, sights or scope rings/mount sound like the most sensible for the guy

I like this idea, though if he's not mechanically savvy I don't know how much the wrench and block would help him (I sure as hell would be happy to take take them though if I was your friend).

Also add a nice grip (MIAD or MOE maybe), Magpul trigger guard, KNS pins, stuff like that. It would make my day if a friend had the foresight to buy me something cool like that.

given that you know nothing about what he's got, some of the recomendations above may not apply (does he have a fsb?). Get some magazines or ammo. A proper AR15 bore brush, carbon fiber rod, etc.
