    a 50mm f1.8. It's right around $100 and is extremely useful.

As long as he doesn't break it or sell off all his canon gear, he'll likely have it forever. (unless he upgrades to a 1.4 or 1.2 :o)

    Crumpler industry disgrace neckstrap.

I picked one up today at REI and oh is it wonderful. $30 so it's cheaper than you want to spend but WORTH IT.

50 f/1.8 is a cool gift for a beginner photographer too. He might not use it long, but he'll have fun for a while at least. $100 as mentioned already.

Stroboframe + TTL cord . The stroboframe is a braket that keeps the flash horizontal because the light doesn't spread the same when the flash turns sideways. The cord is an extension cord for the flash. Plus a good camera bag. You can also get some diffusers. Your money will go farther on eBay.

great for portraits & for low light situations and when you just want to keep the camera small and light.

what exactly does he shoot? i wouldn't recommend the same thing for a wild life shooter than I would a portrait shooter.
