I went to a bjj class last night offered at my school gym and they require that we all wear a Gi starting the 3rd week. One of the guys in the class said he sells Gi's for $45 and that it's pretty much as cheap as it gets. Since I have no idea the difference between a Gi, is there anything that I particularly want or should ask for? Or are they all pretty much the same?

Different cuts/weaves. I would not want to do bjj in a judo cut gi. The sleeves are much bigger and it makes it a huge pain in the ass to get them free.

you pretty much get what you pay for.
make sure you get one designed for bjj.
karate gi's are too thin and not made to be pulled and tugged on, theyll tear.
as mentioned above, judo gis are way too big, the coat is longer and the sleeves are way wide.

i have gi's from atama, vulkan, and koral. love them all, but atama is by far the best in durabilty and comfort.
also, atama is known to shrink.

the vulkan material isnt as soft, but its a summer gi so its a lighter fabric, yet is very durable for its density.

the koral is a great all around gi, does everything good enough. i actually like their belt the best.

ask him if its a standup gi or a judo gi or a bjj gi

if its standup gi it will last you about 2 weeks before it tears

judo gi is okay, it doesnt cause too many worries, although it does give your opponent some leverage because its a bit looser than bjj gi. The leg pants on judo gis are not double reinforced, so unless your fighting some crazy sambo mofo ankle lock master you dont need to worry about your leg pants. My bro does it with a judo gi and i cant notice the difference.

BJJ gis are expensive, i got a extreme gi (adidas brand) it does the job fine.

    I'd guess it's a cheapie Judo Gi.

I've got 2 Century Judo Gis and recently purchased a Kikskin BJJ Gi. The Kikskin is a bit lighter, much more fitted, and the lapel/collar is a lot softer making collar chokes that much more bearable.

I think my Century was 60 bucks or so, the Kikskin about 100. I'll be buying another Kikskin soon.

i'll make sure to ask the brand, but i'm guessing with $45 i'd probably be getting a pretty shitty gi, no?
i'm thinking if I get more serious, i'd put down more money though.

    thanks for the input!

it's an HCK bjj gi, which he says is supposedly thick and won't rip easily.

anyone have any personal input on HCK brand?

hck bjj gi for 45, buy it. over built and underpriced. it wont win any beauty pagaents, but it does the job. Hell, the unbleached single standard gi is 50 + shipping. 45 is definately a good deal.

I have a HCK gi, its my favorite and oldest gi.

The collar is extra thick on it and makes it so its harder for people to choke you with.

Did Judo for 7-8 years, so I'm most comfortable in that. Ordered a Mizuno 1.5 for my BJJ classes, don't care if its a lil too long or whatever, the BJJ one felt weird on me and I didn't like it.

nice, glad to hear i'm getting a pretty decent deal.

any idea on an easy place to get a mouthguard and a set of those earmuff/protector things? I was defending a RNC by dipping my chin and the guy just squeezed his arm over my teeth, so i think I need a mouthguard. I definitely don't want cauliflower ears either.

    koral > atama
atama's damn price increase did them in. i'm not a huge fan atama gis honestly, they remind me of tighter fitting judo gis. They still have the diamond skirt on them. all the jiu jitsu gis i got have the same weave throughout. and one thing you should watch for is........... judo gis have stitching down the back of the gi, it's uncomfortable as hell if you're always playing the guard game. most jiu jitsu gis are one piece designs that don't have that seam running down the back.

It's just some small stuff i've come across

oh and korals are PRE-shrunk, but even then pre shrunks still shrink a puny bit. to prevent shrinking, cold wash, and hang dry.
