Which do you prefer and why......

Personally, I love Gi....I am ok at no gi....Reasoning for now is based on the ability to really get a hold of someone.....No Gi is great too because it really helps me work on my sweeps and reversals.....

I prefer No Gi because it applies more to MMA training/fighting and, if I ever needed to use it, street use. BJJ as an art and competition (with gi) is nice, but it's not my personal focus.

no gi, if you get in a fight are ya gonna say oh hold on can you put a gi on first, naw i like to train for what i might need to use in either competition (not much gi stuff around here) or if i gotta use it in life (not many people wear gi's these days lol)

plus i sweat like a pig and it's just more laundry i'd have to do

To reference the guys that are doing BJJ for MMA, I completely understand your position....I do BJJ for sport, general workout and to learn a new art.....

To the guys that reference street fighting application, all I have to say is I don't get into street fights and If someone does decide to pick a fight with someone my size (6'4 275), or jump me, I am going to go for the eyes, nuts, throat, bite etc.....A good rule of thumb, that I have only had to use once, if you stick your thumb in someones eye, past your first knuckle, they will stop.....

Ninja Edit.....Personally a guy that would attack me or want to fight me provokes a much different response, than a high school or college fight, simply because it envokes a FIGHT or flight response.....

i'm 6'3" 270 pounds and have been stabbed and shot at in my life so i guess i'm looking at things from a different perspective. don't matter how big you are if someone has a blade or gun, you better be damn fast runner or able to take a guy out or a little of both and lucky lol, but hey whateva, i vote no gi :)

(cut more than a stab i guess, elbow to wrist when i blocked the swing)
(shot at as i ran away, stupid argument that went bad, dude reached in a pocket i ran, guy shot a couple rounds and missed thankfully)

all i'm saying is if i'm ever in a bad situation like this again, i want to be as ready as humanly possible to have the best chance possible to defend myself and size alone doesn't get the job done imo, cause i'm a big guy too but weapons equal out those odds real damn fast

(both of these things happened over a decade ago by the way, i don't live that way anymore) (not that anyone gives a shit lol)

I try to do a day a week of no-gi, but for the most part lately it has been all gi. I think that everyone should learn with a gi, just because (IMHO) it will keep your game from establishing sloppy habits that you can get away with early on. I feel tighter and more in control after learing with a gi, even when rolling no gi.

When I roll with someone who is exclusively no-gi it seems like their game can be more based on attributes (how fast, strong, or explosive). I dont think some people want to wear a white belt either :mamoru:

I love both. Gi for the judo and technique and no gi for the MMA aspects.

I prefer gi but i do better in no gi, its weird.

If you look at the top fighters in the world, they all trained gi one point in their life, gi is vital to the mma world imo for the technique it gives you.

I've only done no-gi, but from what I've seen of gi I like the style of no-gi better.

No Gi. Gi grappling promotes too many bad habbits.

I agree. Damn you Fedor, Nog brothers, Shogun, Liddell, Arona, Anderson Silva, Paulo Filho, Marquardt, GSP, Matt Serra, BJ, & Aoki for all your bad habits!

i have more fun in no gi. but i love wearing my belt, and choking people with their collars. i would never want to give gi training up. its very beautiful to me. I'm over the whole "well that would never work in a real fight" thing. I have a reasonable idea of what would work, and if I get in a fight I'll use those techniques.

But in the meantime I enjoy the technical and aesthetic parts of grappling without worrying about the lava/broken glass/eye gouging/nut grabbing aspects of a real fight.

    all in good fun :o

If Chuck was paired up against someone like Arona, he would need all the BJJ skills he has.

Wow.. I thought I was skinny at 5'3" and 135.

I like training with the gi for the art aspect of it, but I seem to do better with no-gi grappling, as I can escape easier and take advantage of my size better. With the gi, it's easier for bigger opponents to keep me down.

Can I ask you a serious question? How well can you take a punch at that height-weight? head/body
