Just got back from watching GI Joe followed by Star Trek. I enjoyed Star Trek a lot more. GI Joe had way too much cheap CGI in it for my liking.

Like GI Joe to Star Trek would even been a comparison.

I saw it yesterday. It was enjoyable.

If you cried about Transformers ruining your childhood, you probably won't like this movie. If you were able to watch it and enjoy it, you'll probably feel the same way about GI Joe.

    Fair enough statement.

A close friend and me fight constantly about expectations and movies.
I feel that before you walk into the theater you should already have an expectation for how the movie is and then grade your enjoyment compared to that expectation.
He thinks that if something sucks, it sucks and if it doesn't it doesn't.

GI Joe makes a fine example of my expectation argument.
Look at the source material for a second.
All the source material starts at a line of toys in the 80's. Each toy was marketed with a writeup about how that toy fit into the line of toys universe. Some poor schmuck at Hasbro was tasked with writing up a paragraph about each toy and that is where all the GI Joe source started at.
From there we go to a cartoon that was marketed at 6 - 12 year olds (today we call them 'tweens'). The cartoon was.... well.... it was what it was. For a cartoon aimed at that age group it wasn't too bad.

Then we go to a comic book which I never read.

My point is that Transformers wasn't completly awful - and that counts as a minor miracle. For this movie to be anything but comepletly awful counts as a 2nd minor miracle.

When you walk into this movie you have to be prepared for it to suck. When you give your money to the attendant you have to look them in they eye and say, 'Hey I know $9 is a lot of money in todays economy. I know this movie is statisticaly likely to be the most awful thing I do all week. You are not ripping me off. I walk into this of my own free will.'.

You walk into this movie with that attitude and you will find it to be a great movie. It is a lot of fun. Tons, and tons of action. More bad CG then George Lucas can shake an Ewok at.

    And the leaps in logic.

My review is you need to come to grips with what you are going to see. If you do you are in for a good time. If you are like my best buddy.... don't waste your money.

Note to myself: need to look into the effects that explosions have on the density of frozen water.

Thought it was enjoyable. Went in there expecting exactly what it had to offer.

Damn yo. We did some of the vfx for GIJOE and Star Trek (I worked on both). I wasn't expecting the world with JOE. Was ok in my book. Some of the vfx were definitely hit or miss. FYI, We did the Paris sequence, and the Convoy attack sequence at the beginning of the film.

Tron Legacy VFX look really promising. I'm really excited about this one.

Well, the previews looked like complete shite, and the movie certainly delivered just that.

worst movie i've seen in at least 10 years. it goes without saying that it never should have been made. hopefully the director died shortly after completion of the film.

star trek was fucking kill though. way better than everything after the second one.
