we are moving to japan and she wants a computer tha will replace a big clunky desktop.

she will be using the student discount and wants to get it as cheap as possible.

what stuff is essential. she usees the computer to store mp3s, internet browsing and email. really basic stuff. she has a 4 year old dell right now.

Seriously you don't need to MAX the RAM out. You would be fine with 512 or 768 if all you are doing is surfing the web and email.

No need to throw $200 worth of RAM into the unit.

don't forget about the apple student discount, i don't even think they check with the school/college to see if your a current student, but it will save you $50 on a 12" ibook and $100 on the other one

i got my gf a 12'' ibook a little while ago, her first mac, and she loves it.

only problem is the 40G hard drive ships with not much space left on it....so i'd probably up the hard drive as much as possible, use Monolingual, uninstall garage band & its samples, etc
